Embsay fleet 2012

Just a quick update:
Norman - Passed it's annual steam test. Had some work carried out - in service.
6619 - passed annual steam test. Has 1 year remaining. New brick arch going in later this week then back in traffic.
Beatrice - PASSED IT'S STEAM TEST - undergoing running in / de-snagging. Very positive.
Illingworth - firebox is now in the boiler and awaits the stays completing. Chassis thought to be complete now. Cab needs rebuilding.
Annie - rewheeling due? New crank pins fitted? (Can't confirm this as I've not seen it for a while)
22 - boiler has returned. Needs staying.

How is the May bank holiday mixed traffic weekend looking at this early stage?

6619, Norman, Beatrice, D9513, D5600?

 

Beatrice seems to have reached Bolton Abbey for the first time - running in is going very well by all accounts.

As far as the May Bank weekend goes, you were close - D.5600 is out with various air pipes being replaced under one cab. 31 119 is going to be in traffic and should feature a new livery if the current plans come off. I'll post more once the timetable is agreed - we've come through various alternatives, before landing back on our initial one! All depends on locomotive permutations and running in trials!

Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway - Events

A Branchline Weekend / Mixed traction gala is in the advanced stages of planning for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. It will feature a total of 5 locomotives (subject to availability) from the steam and diesel fleets and will see trains running every thirty minutes from both stations. Directors Saloons will be attached to the passenger trains, the Stately Trains 6-wheelers will be in service, and goods trains will be run.

Following a lot of hard work and many challenges to overcome, it looks as though the very first timetable we produced will be the one we run to. This will go up here shortly once final details are checked. This features three different passenger services and two goods trains. Tickets can be bought online for this event.

 

Southern Locomotives Ltd and E&BASR have extended the hire agreement for Norman. Also, Hornby have just released a model of Norman in its current livery, so a Photo and Video competition has been announced to celebrate these events.

Called in at Embsay on saturday afternoon whilst on the way back from a few days in York just over a week ago and found 6619 on the service train and Norman in the shed having some attention to injector water valves. Seeing as I know a few people there I was treated to a guided tour of the yard and workshops and Annie's chassis is looking very good, as is Illingworth's. It will be good to see these two back in traffic, particularly Illingworth as it is a unique loco. Beatrice was also back in the shed following problems identified during the test run previously and had the pistons out for corrective work. Can't comment on the big diesels as these get a cursory glance only!

As ever a friendly line and well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Timetable now online - sadly not the one we'd worked so hard on as we've 'lost' Beatrice from te equation as remedial work is still being carried out. It *nearly* made it in time. If some miracle occurs between now and then, we'll tweak things AGAIN, but I doubt she'll be about in any shape, sadly. So near, yet so far!

Why is the main passenger set only three coaches on a day when you might reasonably expect good attendance? A short set like that is also going to look a bit odd with the class 31.

 

(Second attempt at a reply - wouldn't post before!)

Firstly, we feel that running around with a lot of empty carriages is a waste of fuel.
Secondly, we have additional rolling stock available should the situation require it.
Thirdly, we're putting on a branchline gala - 2-coach trains were the norm for Skipton-Ilkley for a large part of its life latterly, other than diverted services.

It IS less economical with 6619 to run a short train than a larger one, but overall we thought that less was probably more for this event as we've not been able to advertise it the way we would like owing to uncertainties of what would be available.

At one point we were set for 3 goods trains and a Directors' special, but again, plans had to change. It should bode well for next year as a lot of work has been done...

 

Argh!! The class 14 is not quite finished, so it looks as though it will not be out on Saturday. The rest of the details are as they were, but the loco allocation will now have to change. We're working on an alternative tiemtable, but neither the 04, 08 or Beatrice will be able to step in (brake blocks, speed and big end being the issues in order)

(I am aware this would be better suited to the Events area - I didn't want to end up duplicating information)

(Oh - and another matter, why does this tell me I'm logged in, allow me to compose a reply and then make me log in again AND LOSE IT!)

It looks that way. I will confirm things when I have them in front of me. I would like to thank 6619s owners for the last 30-odd years for bringing a fantastic bit of kit to Embsay.

Other news:
Beatrice has been out on light duties at last with the Stately Trains services - hopefully on Sunday as well.

Norman has had some re-bushing / metalling carried out on the reverser linkages and eccentrics or big ends (can't remember which as both were talked about) and re-entered traffic successfully.

Illingworth's boiler has seen some more new rivets and now requires staying.

Was reading the 6619 thread and noticed that the K&ESR's USA Tank 65 is meant to be coming up on loan to Embsay and was wondering if anyone knew when she'll be in service? Was planning on visiting Embsay either in November or December so would love to plan a visit when 65's due to run.

She was out today on test and familiarisation. Sadly Beatrice (which was out last Sunday) developed problems which now need further work carrying out on one of the crossheads to resolve.

Illingworth's boiler is now looking a lot better - stays present. May manage to find out more tomorrow evening.
