Lots of advance warning notices at and approaching the crossing plus a mail drop to all the local postcodes in our case last year.

The road signs are the legally required bit but it would be silly not to try and raise peoples awareness - especially if they have been using the crossing for x number of years and now don't even notice the signs

Thank you Damian, Colin, & Brmp, for putting me on the right path here.
I had got confused over progress on the MNR (again ! ) as I thought that the Worthing Crossing visited by a steam excursion last August was the crossing on the B1145, which does go to Worthing, and is just beside North Elmham station. In fact the crossing was on a minor road some distance further south. Progress is a bit slower than I had expected, but getting into North Elmham is a major milestone and the project team deserve our congratulations and support.

The recent publication of the 30th edition of Minor Railways by Peter Scott see http://www.scottjf.demon.co.uk/minor_railways/
led me to compare the progress that had been made with [at random] the 24th edition published in 2012.

Based on the criteria "Route length of line in miles and chains as available to passengers which is not necessarily the same as what has been used for other purposes. I identified the following extensions for standard gauge railways.

    England

    1. Wensleydale Railway 5 miles 52 chains
    2. Churnet Valley Railway 3 miles 27 chains
    3. Bluebell Railway 2 miles 2 chains
    4. Gloucester & Warwickshire Railway 1 mile 5 chains [does not include recent extension to Broadway]
    5. Epping and Ongar Railway 79 chains
    6. Eden Valley Railway 75 chains
    7. Chinnor & Princes Risborough Rly 68 chains
    8. Aln Valley Railway 46 chains
    9. Helston Railway 40 chains
10.= Plym Valley Railway 32 chains
    10= Swindon& Cricklade Railway 32 chains
    12 . Cambrian Heritage Railway 24 chains
    13. Somerset & Dorset Railway 22 chains [does not include recent extension]
    14. Telford Steam Railway 15 chains

    Scotland

    1. Border Union Railway 11 chains

    Wales

    1. Llangollen Railway 2 miles 21 chains
    2. Gwili Railway 1 mile 67 chains
    3. Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway 28 chains

These mileages are not necessarily official, being based in part on the observations of enthusiasts and are supplied in good faith and based on information available as at 1 January 2018.

I have excluded instances where the railway previously existed but was either not open to the public or its existence was not known of, together with extensions of 10 chains or less.

Congratulations are due to all those who contributed in whatever manner to the extension of the railway network.

Any observations, corrections and details of projects currently in progress welcome.

What about the GCRs extension? Is the branch line? Was that complete in 2012?

    Whitwell and reepham station possibly.

The Mid Norfolk has also had passengers travel Futher north year by year.

Also, what about the S&D’s vision to unearth the northern portals of Chilcompton Tunnel?

Apparently they're nearly at the infilled chilcompton cutting. Then about 1/4+ mole or so supposedly to reach the tunnel.

Been said that there's a gun club who occupy both bores & gain access from the southern portals. If the gun club won't move then they've no chance of extending further.

That's what they are using to dig out the cutting.

What is wrong with them? If they used a full mole, the job would be done 4x faster. Sheesh!

The Chilcompton Tunnels are occupied by a gun club, who also have a section of trackbed as a car park
