Isn't "a long way below the Pennines" somewhere in Australasia? Whilst I know that she enjoyed a spell in Oz in 1988/89, I can't see anyone in say, Victoria, getting excited about FS with beauties like this down under.

Sorry - a blatant digression. It felt that this thread needed cheering up. And don't blink. The clip around 5 min really isn't in the UK!

But surely - with Swindon's experience of a wider gauge - that penalty should be at least doubled; or am I showing my age again ? ;)

Agreed absolutely. Lots of things have gone wrong for 4472 and 122 pages of this thread have vented frustration, expressed anger, rattled political cans of worms, apportioned blame and so on. This is all now water under the bridge and the clock can not be turned back. Misjudgements have been made, things have been said that perhaps may have been better left unsaid. Now is the time to move on and look forward in the hope that the front frames will not require renewal. Even that is not insurmountable, the Urie Locomotive Society are replacing the front frames on two S15s.

When Alan Pegler purchased 4472 in 1963, his intention was that if/when continued running was no longer mechanically viable, the loco should be placed on display as part of the National Collection. He made a few misjudgements as well, but he will always be remembered for saving 4472 in the first place and for his part in the Festiniog renaissance.

Well put 10640, and as far as cheering up goes when the progress reports start creeping out of Bury, which shouldn't take too long providing the Museum doesn't want to sit on development news, (just in case) quite a few of us will feel a little more sunny about things.

It would appear only the rolling chassis has so far gone to Bury, the boiler, tender and cab remain in York workshop, thus avoiding the risk of transport damage keeping them in a warm dry environment, and saving space in Bury?.

The Heritage Railway section here on NP contains the latest statement via a link to their Facebook page - this covers the agreement with Ian Riley as part of the professionally-managed contract. The despatch of the rolling chassis is clearly because the contract involves the removal of all cylinders to fully evaluate the condition of the main frames, as a result of which the project may not progress any further.

....meaning, I presume, that we don't yet know what condition the frames are really in......and it's now 2013. But, remaining positive, at least there is a good chance that an accurate assessment will be made and a definitive step will then be taken in one of two directions. To be honest, and slightly controversial, I don't actually mind which way this goes. As has been said already, we are where we are and forward is the only direction possible.

It means what it says in the Baker/Roche report, linked earlier in this thread.
I do not know if the 12 week timescale is still correct under the current contract, since the consultants' report obviously was written before the tender went out.

You can open the NRM website and read the same statement in their press releases. No need to access HR at all.

Black! I wanted to see her run in wartime black!

She's been green her whole life in preservation, never understood why people couldn't stand a couple of years in another colour.

Personally, I think she'd look splendid in fully lined SECR livery with lots of polished brass and copper... :)

    Just kidding! Time for work...

Did FS ever run in BR "Great Eastern" blue? I've always thought that was a particularly fine looking livery - certainly, IMHO, been the most attractive livery carried by Tornado so far.
