It was at Acacia Ridge where the two trains were sat side by side for a bit while over a hundred members of the public found their way into the rail yards for a look (me included), before 4472 & 3801 set off for the south. It was a magic few days when FS was here.

Thank you for sharing your photos. I presume they were taken at Southall. A couple of chaps I don't recognise so might have started after my time with the loco I guess.
Unfortunately for me I had less time available, to help as support crew, after returning from Aus in 1989.

I wondered if it was Acacia Ridge yard but my 'little grey cells' wouldn't work together to come up with a definitive answer.
There were (seemingly) hundreds of people wandering around the [working?] yard and I couldn't understand why more 'order' wasn't enforced to assist everyone's safety.
Still, apart from the odd trip on ballast I don't recall any trouble - hence the expression "No Worries, Mate!" I suppose.

Flying Scotsman is trending on Twitter tonight but not for a good reason I am afraid. Unfortunately there has been a lot of trespass reported during today's Railtours. Absolute morons.

If the person in well-washed [very pale blue] Bib & Brace is me - I don't recognise myself being so slim!
Also, I tended to wear a greasetop cap although I may have worn a green woolly hat. (Southall could be a cold, windy place at times.)
The 'little grey cells' do play tricks with my memory at times.

There are many people vehemently opposed to 'scrap' (as some term it) running on the big railway getting in the way of real railway business. This just gives them more ammo.

No doubt "tresspassing" is a superior version.

I know that it doesn't make any difference to what happens when FS is out and about but are we any closer to knowing exactly what it is about this locomotive that presents the gauging problem? And was any of this avoidable back when the loco was in bits?

I only ask because I have read that in the overhaul of Clan Line, the MNLPS has engineered a slight reduction in the overall height of the loco to make it even more gauge friendly than it was previously, and that was pretty reasonable in the first place.

It's really a question of forethought and planning, isn't it? Anyone from the NRM with an answer or can't you 'tweak' museum pieces?

Its all very laudable the MNLPS reducing the envelope of their engine, but lets be fair, NR are duty bound to keep the envelope at a level, that was acceptable before its overhaul.

The NRM has done nothing wrong in my view, NR continue with works, that don't return the track envelope to what it should be, and their is nobody to take them to task.

They will continue in this vein, as long as that is the case.....

If NR fails to maintain the "track envelope" at its original levels I wonder if it is in breach of its licence hence liable to penalties and claims by those who are subject to "out of gauge" restrictions.
