    R.I. P. Alan Pegler.

I just hope he was 100% unaware of some of the comments being thrown around on here about his purchase and subsequent management of the loco.

As to the spiralling costs of overhaul - when there is an inquest - as there undoubtedly will be, I'll put a pint on the table for anyone who can set down a method statement that would have found all these faults with the loco in its fully assembled condition, and it must be remembered that the loco weas bought in a competitive market.

There was no option for a surveyed and marked down price - more's the pity now the abuses that Scotsman had endured have come to light.

Whilst not every engine should be a rolling memorial, in this instance, I think it would be fitting that a plate marking Alan Peglers contribution to the locomotive, and preservation, be carried somewhere subtly on 4472 in his memory would be highly appropriate.

Very sad news indeed. A true gent of the railway preservation movement. R.I.P Alan.

I acknowledge that he was honoured but when Bankers get Knighthoods for bankrupting the country that award seems a poor acknowledgement for the legacy he left. His involvement in the preservation of the Talyllyn Railway that started the whole Heritage Movement as it exists today and the contribution it makes to the UK economy and his preservation of 60103 as the first main line express locomotive to be privately preserved surely deserved better recognition for the pleasure he has helped to generate rather than those whose efforts have brought so much grief and distress.

What was his involvement with the Talyllyn Railway?

    A Thingy...
I'm really saddened by the news of Mr. Pegler's death. I never met him, but what he achieved will hopefully live on for many years to come. He kept a foot in the door for steam when BR implemented their ban, was instrumental in establishing the force of nature that is the Ffestiniog Railway and helped raise the profile of the movement. Not only that, personally suffered for something that he believed in. When all's said and done, I think the epitaph on Sir Christopher Wren's tomb in St. Paul's cathedral is very apt: '[He] lived beyond ninety years, not for his own profit but for the public good. Reader, if you seek his monument - look around you'. His monument is not just 60103/4472, but arguably mainline steam in the 21st century. I think the first train hauled by that locomotive should honour his passing.

That would be a really nice touch, along with a small memorial plaque as suggested and a small dedication ceremony.

I think so. The Talyllyn's driving force was Tom Rolt but if Alan Pegler was involved as well then I will stand corrected.

Very sad news about Alan Peglar and so close to Tony Marchington's death as well. I agree that a small plaque somewhere on the loco would be a nice touch and the first train back be in honour of him.

I love the idea of a memorial plaque on the engine, and would be willing to donate towards it. I'm sure a lot of people would want to donate towards such a cause.

If it was done in the same style as the plaque on Tornado, seen here, on the main frames, I think it would be a very moving and very worthy tribute to Alan Pegler.

One thing I just remembered and is even more upsetting now after Alan Peglar's passing. He sadly didn't make it to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of his purchase of 4472 next year as well as Scotsman's 90th Anniversary which is also next year.

Very sad news indeed. Although I only met Alan twice, He was a true Gent and had time for everyone.

Perhaps the NRM would consider repainting the nameplates red for the rest of this year once Scotsman goes Green, out of respect for its saviour?
