I have an idea for a useful publicity stunt for a preserved line -- put yourself on Google street view.

The google engineers would need to set up some cameras somehow, maybe in an open wagon, and you'd need a diesel to push it along the line, but I can see it acting as useful publicity and making the technology news.

Anyway, if anyone is interested, you need to fill in the form at https://services.google.com/fb/forms/streetviewinterestedpartner/ -- however the requirement is for property "owners", so it'd have to be any directors happening to be reading this.

It's a sticky because I believe everyone should get a chance to see this and therefore it's a sticky. And also because it's a fantastic idea.

Actually, do we really want to advertise where all our expensive signalling and metal items etc. are stored? Whilst a good idea in principle, you have to take all these things into account.

    Regards,

or go quietly at night when no ones around and re-con and take for free.

Google maps is a good way to show what you have.. to prospective visitors on the railways website.

    HRA?

    Good afternoon all,

I'm a new boy here, but I've followed rail preservation in the UK for years now.

This seems like a very good idea, and it could be one worth putting to the HRA, couldn't it?

Personally i think,no it is not a good idea.

Imagine Mr Pikey sat at home,on Google Street View, lets see what we can find on here, ooh look, "Enter Preserved Rly name here",(Sees expensive loco)"Looks like we can nick some copper off that thing, move camera around, this would then mean they can even plan their entry/escape route(!),it will also allow them to see where signalling etc is,when we have locos such as preserved diesels been robbed,i think railways would be shooting themselves in the foot, for us fotters etc its a good idea, but you have to remember, you cant properly track who is looking.

For example, they see that a steam loco is parked outside (now they know they can find copper on them) a shed, then they see a few more,to them its like a gold mine!

I think we should all bear in mind that most of this info is already to be had on the net, and in any case, it is highly likely that a number of these thefts are perpetrated by others within the movement - whether we like to admit that or not.

I think the advertising angle has on balance to be desirable.

Thats been possible for a long time. Not only is high quality satellite imagery available, but aerial imagery too giving people views of the sides of buildings etc - streetview is really nothing new.

Bit confusing, we also have a thread on this in "General Railway Chat", could they be combined?

    I don't think so.

This is a specific thread about using preserved railways to carry GSV cameras, not what you can see of preserved railways from the existing GSV system. So let's try to keep on topic.

Do you have to use racist terms like 'pikey'?

    HI Martin,

Please cool it; it must be borne in mind that there is a lot of water between us, and Alberta is unlikely to be aware of any racial connotations in the term of which you complain - i certainly am not! I am also speaking as a UK native...

    Best wishes

I do not see how pikey is racist as it is short for turnpike traveller
Quote from the Urban Dictionary follows
From the English "turnpike", the place where itinerent travellers and thieves would camp near a settlement. Pikey is not a racial group, the term is used to describe anyone who lives in a caravan or shares the same values and "culture" of "the travelling community

To get back on topic have a look at our crossing box at Church Lane near Darley Dale
