Not wanting to be a killjoy but £6k pa is hardly a living wage. It is less than the minimum wage but because it is an apprenticeship these rules are not applicable. Give the very physical nature of these roles I hope the successful candidate gets a good pay rise at their first review!

Good luck if you are applying - I think you will need sympathetic parents or a rich partner!

With a wage like that these vacancies are clearly aimed at school-leavers not adults. Apprentices have always been badly paid, when I started mine in late August 1959 my first week's pay was 25s! Mum took the pound for my keep and I got the five shillings: big deal.

Wow I'm pleased to see that the MHR are offering these apprentiships, hopefully all railways will take a leaf out of their book. I've just got my fingers crossed that there'll be something good somewhere for me in the next few years!

These are surely ideal opportunities for someone, but how is the railway able to suggest that the sucessful candidates will be school leavers? Unless the funding for these posts comes from an initiative aimed at school leavers, in which case the advert should say so, then surely no suggestion of age should be made in the adverts.

I think we have a few 'well-over 16s' wishing they were younger or wishing they had the chance to get a job like this when they were 16. I can say this, as I am one of them! #-o

To be honest this is the sort of thing I would love to look at more seriously. Wish there were some more apprentiships up my way in this sort of thing.

I was under the impression that the minimum wage is about £5.73 per hour and the MHR are offering £6.00 per hour. So how can this below the minimum wage. Please can you enlighten me? At my place of work we only pay £5.00 per hour for apprentices. This sounds like a great offer to me.
Well Done MHR management for looking to the future of the railway.

No I do not currently volunteer
It's £6,000 per year, not £6.00 per hour. 8.30 am - 5pm works out at 42.5 hours per week. Multiply that by 52 weeks, and it gives 2210 hours per year, so £6000 / 2210 hours gives £2.71 per hour! Even allowing half hour unpaid for lunch per day still only gives £2.88/hour.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the apprenticeship, it's very worthwhile. I've just completed a 4 year apprenticeship for First Capital Connect, but that started on £10k per year (starting salary is now £11,500 I believe).

If we are going to be picky - you have to deduct 4 weeks holiday, stat holidays and 1 day a week day release.

Don't forget that the MHR isn't a big railway company like FCC and won't beable to afford the kind of salaries these companys pay. At the end of the day whoever gets the posts will be learning a trade and getting paid. £125 a week to a 16 year old is still a lot of money.

As you say apprenticeships are very worthwhile, I started mine with BR in 1992 and have never looked back.
