Many early locomotives for Dutch railways were British built. Some lovely examples in the Utrecht museum.

Iraq has at least one 8f, and LNER type sentinel. The ~Us army may well have destroyed it tho'-it was what what thought to be Saddam's nuclear super train. Sure bringing it back wouldn't be as detrimental to their heritage as the Germans digging up their entire Walls of Babylon and taking them back to Berlin...

Yes they have, but in 2009, whilst at Thirlemere, I was looking at "THE MAJOR" and talking to one of their curatorial people, who had the opinion that the loco "Might" be made available to anyone who had a "Credible" conservation plan as the loco doesn't really quite fit in with what's being done there. Very much an "on the hoof" conversation, but if there were to be a serious effort made, it could well be looked upon seriously. Having said that, the loco can only be described as "a wreck" and where could she possibly be housed when we can't even sort out "CECIL RAIKES"??

there's a couple of these in Australia, former John Brown locos, along with the Kitson Tank engine version. They are "In need of TLC" to say the least, but there are plans to properly preserve them in due course.

I think the term a "dollar" for (I think) five shillings came from this time?

In the process of sorting through news items from the "Romsey Advertiser" for the local history group I came across this image from a December 1941 edition.

I wasn't aware that the UK exported locos to Russia during WW2. ( Certainly 8F's were sent to Iran to supply Russia.)
I suspect this was a photo from pre war years which could be easily reproduced.

To try and complete more information for the records, does anyone have an idea about these locos and where were they destined. The offset headlight is unusual. Something about them suggests Spanish or Portuguese design to me.

    Thanks, Neil

There were certainly some loco exports from the UK to Russia during the 19th Century, including a batch of Fairlies. But after 1900, the only export seems to have been a solitary Beyer-Garratt in 1932. The Russians did, however, import large numbers of locos from USA during both world wars.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Russian_steam_locomotive_classes

I think the poster probably means simply that locos and wagons within UK were being used to haul supplies for Russia to the ports, and so were unavailable for other uses.

Intrigued by the loco picture. I agree that the locos have a broad-gauge look, but I've not come across another photo of an engine in Spain, Portugal or anywhere else with those off-centre headlamps.

Among the WD engines that stayed abroad after WW2 were 184 2-8-0s and 103 2-10-0s in the Netherlands. NS fitted them with longer chimneys, which somewhat altered their appearance.

One of the Southern Railway produced newsreels does feature CKD wagon "kits" being manufactured at Ashford for sending to the USSR, from memory.
It's on one of the DVD's in my (inherited) collection of such things - though I can't remember which one - and stated they were specifically for Russia rather than the link from Iran.

Not locos, but Gloucester C&W certainly
Likewise there were broad (Iberian) gauge 'Hoover' analogies, with simplified control systems, in Portugal. Active until 2001, one is preserved.
