    Re: LU 150 plans...

Had to give this a miss today as my Father and I made the mistake of believing the weather forecast last night. We changed our minds about attending when they said it would be very icy so didn't set the alarm clock. Sod's law it wasn't too bad this morning! Also there are loads of engineering works between us and London today as we found out yesterday when using SWT.

12 of my photos from the first run through Earl's Court station and the return as viewed from the Tesco Olympia car park, followed by the journey back to Lillie Bridge Depot. Video to follow.

My video from today's Met 1 special from Kensington to Moorgate is below - I filmed it at Earl's Court (Olympia Jc), Moorgate and Baker Street.

A great morning out - really enjoyed it!

Great vid. steamvideosnet: However, please remember that Earls Court doesn't have an apostrophe but Baron's Court does.
I've emailed Boris about it but no reply yet..LOL

Only had my point-and-shoot and 2 kids in tow, so a few quick shots from Farringdon.

Very helpful tannoy announcements saying where the heritage train had got to, and when it was due. Nearly got caught by a new Met train on the westbound platform.

    Nice to meet Spamcan81.

A couple of LU battery locos at Farringdon. Acting as "Thunderbirds" for the heritage train?

Great video. Looks like the Tesco car park was a good spot.

Well, there we are. It can be done. Absolutely magic and I am thoroughly looking forward to my own outing next Sunday!

Take Heed, Network Rail. You've got 12 years to come up with something comparable...

    Re: LU 150 plans...

Out of interest, when all this is over, what is going to happen to carriage 353 (and the milk van, for that matter)? Would seem a shame for them just to be locked up back in a museum after all the work done to make them runnable. Are their any plans for them to be permanently based on any railway? (I know 353 is coming to the Bluebell, but only for a special event, not for a long term loan).

    Re: LU 150 plans...

I think I did hear about something happening to 353 but can't remember what it was. Quainton Road with Met 1?

I was passing Farringdon (and went to Kings Cross on my way to football which turned out to be a waste of time from my point of view) earlier but probably missed the train by a long shot and wasn't really looking at times for it and didn't go up until earlier this afternoon.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

I was thinking the exact same question Tom. Epping Ongar perhaps, or Buckingham Railway Centre?

And yes, SDR 200. Of course, the idea of a public passenger railway predates this (Mumbles, 1804), as does the notion of a steam locomotive operated railway, but I believe the S&D was the first marriage of the two.

"Take Heed, Network Rail. You've got 12 years to come up with something comparable..."

Unfortunately, Network Rail has no history or heritage to speak of, being a new construct to permit anything like a semblance of order to exist under the privatisation debacle that the railways in Britain have been put through. The difference between NR and LU is that LU, even today, does have a huge and admirable history which it can still lay claim to, despite all the disruption and watering-down that has taken place over the last couple of decades. LU has managed to keep hold of its genuine public transport enthusiasts (by that I mean those who value public transport as a concept, including the heritage aspect, rather than simple businessmen and women) as senior/top managers. This has meant that the history of the operation is recognised as an asset, rather than a nuisance, and today's events are a testament to that. Network Rail can offer nothing in comparison, which is one reason why it is due to the efforts of the preservation movement that we can still experience 'heritage' operations on the main line as we do. LU's commitment to heritage as part of its day-to-day working is probably second to none - the retention of 'tube' station designs and artefacts from decades past is often overlooked by many, but has not happened by chance.

    Re: LU 150 plans...

An interesting and thought provoking post, Deepgreen.

I hope that NR and the TOCs do however prove us wrong. But it would have to be something pretty special to better these runs.
