I have just had some live phone updates from this awesome tour. Departure from Basel, meeting another tour then parallel running on the Schwarzwald railway . 16 coaches on one train with two locos at the front and one at the back, 4 coach train running alongside with just one loco. This one kept dropping back then stoming past.
Only problem my brother does not do video so there will only be stills. Hope to get copies when he gets back next week. =P~
This would never work here, where the two tours met and the two 10 coach trains were shunted to make the 16 and 4, people wandering around everywhere, over the tracks, between moving stock. Stewards with just orange arm bands keeping an eye on things but nobody getting shouted at or moved.

This sounds splendid - why are the British so neurotic compared to the Germans about going onto the tracks? It didn't use to be like this - I can remember railtours in late 60s when people walked on to the track to take photos and were just sensible. Are our friends on ther Continent more intelligent and can be trusted more? Or do we have too many ambulance chasing lawyers, judges who won't accept that people should be responsible for their own safety and insurance comnpanies who just pay out any claim because they are too lazy to contest anything?

Anyway, these trips look worth going on - hope the pound can regain some of its value!

I came across quite a lot of photos and videos on the web of that Dreikönigsdampf event back at the start of January, it sure looked like a pretty spectacular day out!

There are some great stills on the Schwarzwaldbahn website at...
    http://www.badische-schwarzwaldbahn.de/ ... dampf.html

And a fair selection of video has posted on the web, for example..

Stonking parallel running shot at Gutach, the two trains exactly side by side...
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=msEXr7N_BRM

Lineside shot of parallel running at Gutach...

Another shot at Gutach with the two trains following each other...

Lineside shots at Haslach and Gutach...

    Obergiess Tunnel near Niederwasser...

Farrenhalde Tunnel at Nußbach and at Villingen Station...
    http://www.myvideo.de/watch/5741768/Dre ... 009_Teil_3

Great shot, again at the entrance to Farrenhalde Tunnel...

Lots of onboard action with shots of the parallel running...
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mvBlhjKAsfo

Loads more onboard action from the other train, some nice shots on here...
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BlNb4O3w-po

and even more onboard parallel running shots...
    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6J-xE8C30JU

And can I just add that I am totally jealous of the guy who got this shot of the two trains passing at Gengenbach! - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jpItreDBJRQ

WOW! Awesome stills! Can't wait to watch the Vid's tonight!

I might have to pop over to Germany now, never really fancied it before. Do the germans run these trips semi regularly or was it a once only event?

    Cheers.

As far as I know that particular event, the 'Dreikönigsdampf' takes place every year - Dreikönigs is German for Epiphany, which is taken as a public holiday in certain states in the country, hence a good excuse for a steam bash! It was basically made up of three trains from three organisations...

    Train 1 (EFZ): Singen(Htw.) – Engen – Donaueschingen – Villingen – Hausach – Offenburg und return with 58 311.

    Train 2 (UEF-Ettlingen): Karlsruhe Hbf – Offenburg – Hausach – Villingen and return with 50 2740.

    Train 3 ( Nostalgie-Rhein-Express): Basel Bad. Bf. - Freiburg - Offenburg - Hausach - Villingen - Tutlingen - Singen - Schaffhausen - Basel Bad. Bf. - Haltingen with 41 018 und 01 202

EFZ is the Eisenbahnfreunde Zollernbahn (http://www.eisenbahnfreunde-zollernbahn.de), UEF is the Ulmer Eisenbahnfreunden (http://www.uef-dampf.de) and http://www.nostalgie-rhein-express.de, and they all run various mainline specials throughout the year, along with other organisers. They're kind of like the trips you'd go on in the UK with Past Time, Steam Dreams etc, except that the organisations listed above own the engines themselves. Prices are usually about 60-90 euros, depending on the length of the trip, some of the longer ones are much like you'd get over here... start about 7am and get back about 10pm, so I guess the prices, with the pound as it is at the moment compared to the euro, are about what you'd pay in the UK as well.

"Hunslets Finest" has also put together a list of forthcoming photo specials etc in Germany in his posting viewtopic.php?f=57&t=17779.

    Regards
