I think in the internationally recognised unit of area (*), that equates to about 22.4nW ...

    (*) The Wales, or W. One nanoWales = 223 sq ft, so 5,000 square feet = 22.4nW

The Railcar Association is the HRA and ORR approved umbrella organisation for DMU preservationists. For those who CHOOSE to be a part of this group, the communication and assistance between groups is second to none. Indeed, we were complimented by the Railway Inspectorite for the levels of communication between private DMU groups, which they said were more developed than those in place at the time between carriage and diesel loco groups. The association has records concerning wheelsets and their appropriate use on different classes of DMU, which is what most people stick to.

A problem can come when railways decide they don't need to talk to the association or other groups and that they are better off going it alone. In recent years, communication with Swanage has been sparse. If you refuse to talk with others when things are going well, it is not suprising that folk aren't tripping up to help you when you get wheelset trouble later on.

Wheelset issues are becoming more common, not just on Class 117's. There is currently a final drive/wheelset shortage for Class 101 vehicles, with both the Mid and North Norfolk railways having vehicles affected. This is currently also being worked on, albeit at quite a cost.

    From the latest "Swanning Around"

"You may have read elsewhere that implementation of the trial service to Wareham has been put back to early 2017, owing to nonavailability of refurbished wheelsets for our diesel units. This has come about owing to the difficulty in finding a supplier who can take time out from normal business to tackle our small quantity of non-standard components. Fortunately, through hard work and persuasion, we have a supplier, but, unfortunately, the axles and bearings have been found not to meet the necessary Railway Group Standards required for main line operation. Owing to corrosion of the axle material, which cannot safely be machined away, we have to wait for new axles and bearings to be acquired from South Africa and USA respectively, and these suppliers also have to fit these in with their normal work, so it’s not a short lead-time. Halfords doesn’t do this stuff, so we just have to wait!"

As you wil see the current wheelsets do not meet the necessary Railway Group Standards required for main line operation. I'd guess thjat many DMU wheelsets running now could fall into this category - good enough for 25 mPH running on a heritage railway but not good enough for main line certification

I'm sure that one of our S&T friends can explain it better than me, but my understanding is that it is a device which when properly attached to the token machine will enable tokens to be passed through an opening in the side of the token instrument and into the device which can hold a number of tokens. A token held in the device is not valid authority for a train to occupy the section. They can then be transferred to the other macine on the other platform. This is because once trains start arriving at the up platform and departing from the down platform an excess of tokens will build up in one machine and the other will run out of tokens.

Railway preservation is full of ambitious projects that slip their planned deadlines, but do ultimately occur. I don't see why this should be any different. A lot has been invested (cash and non cash) to make it occur, and not just by the Swanage Railway, but also by Network Rail, Dorset CC etc. So there are more people with a vested interest in seeing it happen than just the SwR.

Like Jamessquared I'd be confident. Remember, it is only the DMU issue that has delayed this by a further 9 months.

And there has been some significant lineside clearance between Worgret and Motala since 2009 so the views will be even better now

And to put this into perspective, the big railway can have delays with new projects as well:

Originally planned for Spring this year, then Summer, now December. And that's before anyone mentions Great Western electrication. :)

Sorry, I was forgetting that it takes ages to get anything done in Britain! I'm sure it will be worth waiting for, to change at Wareham again for Swanage.

Well in Southern days the bridges were numbered from 1 (Near Worgret ) to 31 (Northbrook Road Bridge in Swanage) and the tramway bridge at Norden is bridge no 15. I don't believe any new bridges have been inserted (other than the footbridge at Corfe) so that implies 14 bridges between Norden and Worgret of which 5 are overbridges so that would give 9 underbridges between Norden and Worgret and a further 9 (if my maths is correct) onto Swanage.

Happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Thanks for that David R. Is it sad but that fact is running round my little brain-box now, so it looks like a ' bridge counting on preserved railways' session when it gets a bit quiet at work tonight.
Note to self; do I need to see Psycho the rapist ?

In the section from Worgret to Norden, there are a total of 16 structures on which the railway is carried over something; Bridge 2 (which marks the boundary between NR/SR), Bridges 3, 4 and 5 over the River Frome and streams, Bridge 6 (Holme Cattle Creep) and 6a (culvert), Bridge 7a, 7b (culvert), 8 (cattle creep) and 8a (culvert), Bridge 9 (Grange Road Bridge), culverts 9a and 9b, Bridge 11 (Pikes bridge, where a mineral tramway used to go under the line; it is now the Blue Pool access road), 11a (culvert) and Bridge 13 (another former mineral tramway bridge).

And there ends my route knowledge test for today!
