    Hi all,

Just a quick post to set the record straight regarding 5197. There has been posts in various threads on this forum and also in various railway magazine that have stretched the truth a little.

5197 indeed failed at the ELR however the engine did not have a crack between firehole and the foundation as stated by Std Tank on the 48624 thread. The engine had a 1/2" crack next to one of the washout caps which has been ground out and welded by a coded welder. The engine was then given a hydraulic test to prove the repair.

The engine return to traffic a week after arriving back from the ELR and will share duties until the end of the year with 5199.

    Regards

    Chris

    Chris,
I must apologise for making an incorrect statement. One question though, why was the repair not done at the ELR? This would have allowed the loco to continue with its planned stay until Christmas.

One suspects that the incident with the A class may have something to with fact the ELR did not want to carry out the repair and continue to run the engine.

The engine continues to run well at Ched

This is indeed quite a statement - I would be very intereested in knowing why you think the two are linked?

Im not in place to comment on what happened with the A class, but if the ELR has already had 1 run in with HMRI then they may not want to risk another incident with a loco that they may not know alot about and its full boiler history.

The engine has been at the CVR for many years now and we know the engine and the boiler history well and therefore are satisfied with the state of the engine following the repair.

    Regards

Glad to see it back at the CVR missed the lonesome whistle. Hows the second S160 coming along and when is it hoping to be steamed?
