I see that it still takes nearly 90 minutes extra each way on the South route.

So, adding it all up, WCR plus RTC plus A1LST, that's three days min every week May to September, four days most weeks and five days some weeks in July. That's just steam, I haven't looked at diesel trips, Northern Belle etc. Then there's the Jacobite. Impressive, the scale of it.

It is impressive but when we last had monopoly numbers of trips we also had cancellations. I guess the hope is that the pond is not about to be overfished. We shall see.

Perhaps this is part of the wider plan for the removal of Locomotion from Darlington? :D

Just a shame that steam is still just York - Scarborough and return. The first few seasons included some good climbs.

Hopefully covid will not intervene again. Still, good to read some encouraging news.

Tangential to this thread-- interesting to see a York-Harrogate-Leeds-York evening trip with Tornado in their brochure. I think that's the first steam trip on my local line for about ten years. So who knows, we might yet see the old style SSE back again one day.

Edit --- can't get to UK Steam any more to check the date of the Tall Ships with Leander. 2012 maybe.

It’s the other way round that has the good climb up to Bramhope tunnel. Not so exciting going anti clockwise.

I once heard Oliver Cromwell from Kent on that climb. Mind you it was via my Son's mobile phone.

I wonder if that perception is because the last two miles of the southbound climb is in the tunnel. I haven't got the gradients book but I think the southbound is about 4 miles at 1 in 94 from Arthington Viaduct to the summit just inside the south portal. That's a decent hill but there's nowhere much to see it.

Seems about right. I recall I just missed out on the Harrogate Loop, and knowing how frequent it once was, its still a slightly embarrassing gap on the map! So whether downhill or uphill, I'm booked on February's evening run. Just fingers crossed there's no virus-based disruption at that point in time.

Thanks Paul, So three miles rather than four, but otherwise about right. I think this is the first steam train through the tunnel since it was relined. There were some question marks over that, so presumably any issues on that score are resolved for Tornado.

Hope to see you next year, you too Tom.

Been a long while since I did the counter clockwise run and wasn't aware of any fireworks. Maybe my memory is failing me.

Travelled on this tour right through to Scarborough from Carnforth yesterday, a lovely day out and highly recommended, excellent service from Micheal our steward and the catering crew, especially Tracy who was lovely and made us very welcome.:)
