said it before , but the Jubilees and original Scots continued the LNWR tradition of carrying names over to new builds . some of those names go back to the Grand Junction and Stockton and Darlington , plus the Liverpool and Manchester .
many of those early locos were named after our wooden navy ships .
if you wanna know about railway (and the early Navy and its men) you could do worse than track these names to their origins .

strangely , Rocket AFAIK was not repeated. there are quite a few people who had multiple engines named for them . Sir Hardman Earle being one that springs to mind

    A personal line of thought.

Please leave 60032 Gannet and 60033 Seagull out of this, being originally fitted with the enlarged nostrils were two of 34A's finest, sadly missed.
How about 60041 Salmon Trout 60524 Herringbone as "fishy", and 60043 Brown jack and 34025 Whimple hardly roll of the tongue.

Has a loco ever been named after "Old Hooky" AKA the duke of Wellington, an illustrious military career but as a politician "could do better", and does anyone know why the GWR chose to name some of their locos from Sir Walter Scott writings, from SW england to Eastern Scotland is a long way?

The LNWR had some evocative names but some the finest choices goes to the LNER with its selection of Scottish inspired names: Cock 'O the North, Wolf of Badenoch, Auld Reekie, Madge Wildfire and Hal 'O the Wynd-----------I hovered around the north London suburbs for seven years but never did see 60116.
Have the A1 group ever considered sposorship to change the name and number of 60163 for a time, perhaps on one side only, could it be a money spinner.

I can deal with "Tornado" but "Prince of Wales" leaves me totally indifferent although I completely understand the choice and support everything they do, I do hope 3403 is allowed to carry a more inspirational name, and a BIG perhaps, a chime whistle.

I think the name Auld Reekie was first carried by a NBR Reid Atlantic, shame it wasn’t a GSW loco designed by Hugh Smellie!

I like some of the West Country names on the light Pacific's and thought they were evocative of the part of the country they ran to

60041 Salmon Trout a loco named after a horse named after a fish.

Oddly enough Salmon Trout was the grand sire of Herringbone. Both won the St Ledger, stayers with good speed.

Whisper it quietly but some of the military names are a bit boring. 92 Squadron etc,

Yes, I think regimental and squadron names are boring too. Royal navy ship ones are the best of the military ones, as used on some of the Jubilees

D821 Greyhound, named after a warship that sank 2 ships in the Italian Navy, before being sunk by the Kreigsmarine, built by BR and powered by 2 German engines!

FWIW here are some Liverpool & Manchester names 1829-1845 that were carried by subsequent locos.

Meteor ,Comet, Arrow, North Star ,Planet ,Samson ,Goliath ,Venus .Vulcan, Etna ,Fury ,Vesta ,Ajax ,Orion ,Swiftsure ,Eclipse ,Thunderer ,Lightning ,Cyclops ,Pheonix ,Majestic ,Etna ,Arrow ,Meteor ,Comet ,Vesta ,Lion ,Mammoth ,Leopard ,Mastoden ,Elephant ,Samson ,Buffalo ,Swallow ,Bat ,Stork , Crane , Swan , Atlas , and 15 other bird names .

surprisingly the GWR used a lot of these , especially the bird names and also with animals . even more surprisingly some Brits are represented .

how many classes can you identify without looking them up . ? (some carried by multiple locos)
there are others I haven't listed btw.

some Scottish pre grouping locos carried the name of the branch they worked on , the name being passed on to the successor when they moved on or withdrawn .Strathspey comes to mind but there were others

I found this website of interest as it lists all named steam locomotives of the UK. http://riptrack.net/book/export/html/265

    Interestingly it lists 3 Rockets.

Some of those must have confused passengers, Indomitable, indefatigable, Irresistable, Irrational, Irresponsible. OK I made up the last two!

A google search for Salmon Trout Sandwich is lacking in railway photos... however, I am now hungry.

    60039 Sandwich
    60041 Salmon Trout
    45641 Sandwich

If they had only run via Arlesford, then you could have a Watercress Salmon Trout Sandwich.

Nicer than if they ran with 60095

That list is interesting and worth bookmarking but seems a bit hit and miss with numerous omissions.

....Seconded! I confess I was hoping for a nice strong Scottish name for 2007. If it had to have royal connections, bob knows there are enough of those in existence. That said, the sight of a P2 thundering along the mainline, in a few years, will be no less welcome for all that ... and one I never thought to see!

There was the odd 'interesting' rendering too .... the GW turned out a BG loco with the moniker 'Sampson' and over the water, the Schull and Skibereen had a loco called 'Kent', nameplates, courtesy of someone who'd never seen a letter 'k' (which doesn't exist in the Irish Gaelic alphabet).

Mr Maunsell's 0-4-2st Inchicore works shunter (allegedly assembled from whatever was to hand!) bore a name nobody (one hopes) would permit these days.
