Was this post really necessary ?, some people love steam, some people love diesel, some like both, if I had a quid for everytime I've been on a Railway forum and someone was having a go at traction they didn't like......... well you get the point anyway.

Yes, I think Hatherton Hall is letting his emotions get the better of him here. We all love steam but to say "A4s stand head and shoulders above any diesel" is just pure fantasy I'm afraid. If it was true, Deltics wold never have been built and we'd still have steam today.

There's room for lovers of all types of traction in the world of railway preservation, and with all the external enemies of rail there are out there we really shouldn't be creating divisions among ourselves !

Yes..... the Deltics......I eventually warmed to them........I think SNG would have seen them as a worthy successsor to his beautiful racehorses............

And what's wrong with emotion? It's because we preservationists have this passion that the movement has achieved what it has. There is nothing wrong with anyone saying that "A stands head and shoulders above B." There may be no logic to such a statement but there is little logic involved in railway preservation anyway.

Absolutely nothing wrong with emotion at all, until it leads you to make statements you later regret, or others which bring the preservation movement into disrepute or made a figure of fun and mockery !

So how does saying you prefer A over B bring the preservation movement into disrepute? If you've ever been in the mess room at a heritage railway you'll have heard much stronger statements than what e get on here.

It is an engineering marvel. I wonder what the more powerful naval versions sounded like.

It shows that despite what others might say, when it comes to engineering of this type, this country does have a certain something, which is of course why all but one of the F1 teams are based here...

Funny you should say that as I have been in the mess room of the Strathspey Railway lodge. You're right there are stronger statements made in that environment, but they stay in that environment and aren't made in the public domain where those less committed souls can hear them and get the wrong idea !

Not sure if it is still the case but all Indy cars were built by Lola at Huntingdon at one time.

No idea about the Deltic but haven't the walls of the compartment changed from cream to bright yellow?

Sorry - a bit out of sync for the comment. Being near the sea does bring surprises. Please see attached, taken between Bexhill & St Leonards on a blisteringly hot day. (approx 30 degrees) Never thought I would get ANY exhsust, and while not particularly volcanic, not bad, and in my case, the exhaust went the right way. I nonetheless think that the pic of 60163 still looks good.

Ill have to look at the compartment walls again, hadn't noticed that one. What I was referring to was that Michael Caine's character, Jack Carter is seen with his back to direction of travel leaving Kings Cross but facing as he gets up to leave the train at Newcastle Central. I suppose it could be argued he changed seats after returning from the restaurant car but the window is still on his right hand side. Had he swapped sides in the compartment it would have been on his left. Given Campainr's comment re the colour of the walls the film makers must have used a completely different carriage and compartment

Film nerdiness aside, I think this title sequence is a great record of intercity rail travel on the ECML in 1971, especially the array of semaphores at the end. Not sure whether this is actually outside Newcastle Central or not ?
