Couldn't see a topic for this years Jacobite, so thought I'd start one.

Here's a few shots of the K1 last Friday.

Beginning the climb up to Glenfinnan:

Approaching the summit west of Glenfinnan:

    Blasting up Beasdale Bank:

Hopefully, the start of another good season. It certainly looks promising, as the K1 had load 7, which is unusual so early in the season.

Nice shots - showed me what I had missed. Unfortunetely I travelled on the train on Thursday when the cloud was low and rain persistant. I will look to upload a few pics to my site in the next few days though.

Had a good run to Mallaig with 62005 last week!!

Was interesting to note that the station toilets at Mallaig are locked, and display notices "for First Scotrail customers only"!!!

Lots of people boarding the train early.....................................?

    Where's the shots of Waverley???

There have been two LNER steam machines in Knoydart this weekend - I have the sun burn to prove it!

The K1 was in fine form last week - both to ride and to watch, and Waverley has had the best start to a season in years. What a shame she missed the K1 by just twenty four hours.

We turned out to watch 5231 this morning before driving home - but the swing bridge at Banavie was stuck open - game over!

With the K1 having a few problems and booked to head south to Carnforth tomorrow, it's left to 45231 to work the jacobite. Here are a few pics from last Friday (June 12th) with 45231 standing in for the K1.

    Getting away from the fort.

    Great video there, Austin. =D>

I was on the Jacobite on July 4th, single Fort William to Mallaig (as part of a great Scottish tour by rail that I did with some friends).

    Thanks everyone for your kind comments about the first part of my video. Part 2 is now uploaded to YouTube and can be found here;

I'd like to thank Simon (steaming yorkshire) for his advice on locations following his visit to Fort Bill the previous week to mine, it made things much easier for me.

I will be uploading some on board footage (very noisy!!) in the next few days.

Is it just me, is it that particular loco, is it a new mike you may have? There seems to be an almost fierce quality to the sound on your part 2 that I don't often hear? Perhaps it was the half dozen hillsides echoing it back at you.

Loved the first sequence and the one at Ranochan, but it was all good tbh. 5*

Thanks, its the Rode Videomic I always use and I think the sound did bounce back off the hills especially at Ranochan. 45231 was being worked hard that day on the return to the Fort, more so than when I travelled behind her.

One point about the route logistics though. The Five was reaching a fair speed tender first, and that all the way to FW. Isn't running that way supposed to be ruinous to a loco long-term?
62005's trip to Carnforth was supposed to be to repair tyre damage, wasn't it? Could there be a connection?

Thanks very much for the kind comments re the videos, should be brilliant in October with the autumn colours. Re tyre damage, they hand a leaflet out on the train advising on the locos etc. and say the train is tender first from Mallaig as they haven't got a turntable.... YET!! Maybe there is something being planned for the future.

Just uploaded a video of onboard footage, departing Fort Bill and then on the climb to Glenfinnan.

The former Whitchurch turntable was acquired from the SVR with a view to location at Mallaig . I think the costs of excavating a pit in solid rock as well as locating said pit have stalled the project .

The line limit is the same, doesn't matter if your going Fort Bill-Mallaig or Mallaig-Fort Bill.

As for 62005's trip to Carnforth due to tyre damage, don't know where you've heard that!!

Tender First isn't ideal, but the Mallaig line will trash a loco's tyres trather quickly regardless of direction, so there probably woulden't be a great deal to be gained by right way running in terms of tyre wear, probably more for sighting and asthetic purposes.
