The support crew are human - they need a break too...that's it, pure and simple.

Tornado successfully entered service today - as far as we could recall, it was the same driver/guard combination as the last time a BR Green LNER design Pacific made its first public runs on the line!

This afternoon, 60163 worked with the BR Maroon set and is expected to do so for the first round trip tomorrow before working The Moorlander lunch train (also with ordinary seating).

Places still available for 60163's first mainline trips in BR Green on Monday and Tuesday evenings from Grosmont to Battersby and back - the maximum speed on this stretch of the Esk Valley is higher than that on the West Highland extension! A couple from yesterday.

    Battersby 30-5-2011 [50% reduction].JPG Levisham 30-5-2011 [50% reduction].JPG

Seats still available on tonights run to Battersby. Cracking run and excellent Pie and Peas last - all enjoyed in Pullman luxuary!

    You can pre-book: http://www.nymr.co.uk/2011/05/evening-excursion-with-tornado/

Or turn up on the night and pay.

People tend to forget that the maximum speed between Grosmont and Battersby is 45mph - higher than the West Highland Extension - and the scenary is pretty spectular, with the side valleys such as Westerdale opening up from the main Esk Valley before a stretch of classic Moorland and then the Cleveland Hills rising each side as Battersby itself is approached. It is also a pretty constant climb for much of the outward journey.

It's not my normal practice to talk about locomotive liveries, but that machine just looks spot on in Brunswick green. :clap2:

There will be a chance to see something very similar on the mainline in the autumn. I see from UKSteam.info that Tornado has picked up two VSOE turns: around the Surrey Hills on Fri 30th Sept and to Bath and Bristol on Wed 12th Oct.

This was - as David Elliott, the Trust's Director of Engineering put it - a brief flight of fantasy that we undertook before the engine was repainted in her current guise. By the time Arthur Peppercorn's design had moved from drawing board to reality, post war nationalisation of the railways meant the LNER had become part of British Railways. Maybe those canny Northerners wanted to make best use of the remaining LNER paint supplies lying around in the Works :) but British Railways it had to be on the tender.
