I saw it at Peterborough, then on my train to KX, I got an unusual video of it as my Cl91 passed it on the upslow. Not believing my luck, I detrained at Stevenage and saw it again

"Hundreds of onlookers, many of whom had been waiting for more than two hours, crowded platform one at Kings Cross as the first steam train to enter the capital in more than 40 years arrived."

I opened up my Yahoo and the top news story was a video of Tornado produced by IRN who now say "the first of its type to enter the capital in 40 years ..."
Mind you according to the BBC story the train was painted apple green! when did the coaches get a make over!
But despite the usual journo language, the A1 Trust have done a supurb job with their publicity machine. I will forgive some journo lapses if it spreads the word about Tornado and main line steam resulting in more bookings by joe public.

    Tornado Media coverage

Tornado has had media coverage to die for (what wouldn't I give to see GWR 2807 have such coverage!) but there are a few howlers. This one from Tiscali:
"LONDON, ENGLAND - The Talisman, the first new mainline steam locomotive to be built in Britain for almost 50 years, enters London's Kings Cross station on February 7, 2009 in London, England. The newly constructed GBP3 million Peppercorn class A1 60163 Tornado is painted in apple green livery with 'British Railways' on the tender. The journey marks the first time a once-familiar Peppercorn class A1 locomotive has been to London for over 40 years."After all the loco is carrying a "Talisman" headboard and there is no sign saying "Tornado" so I guess its an easy mistake for a reporter (and the vast majority of the population) to make - but its not correct of course! However, I'm not knocking the fact that its excellent publicity and the photograph with it is good too! However, the name Tornado is referred to in the main text.

    Re: Tornado Media coverage

Reminds me of a Sunday last year....I took my Sis on the Shakespeare and as Rood Ashton appeared from Snow Hill Tunnel she looked at the Shakespeare Express head board and said "I thought you said it was going to be Rood Ashton Hall".
I've also been asked on occasion why the engine has two names.
After all the brilliant publicity over the last few weeks if it makes the public more aware of the preservation scene in general then I for one will forgive the journo's their mistakes.

Just been looking at the trust's site; Is it really wise for the homepage only to have this?

    How to travel behind Tornado

7th February 2009 - The Talisman - Darlington to London Kings Cross with Tornado, with return using modern traction. Picks up at Darlington and York only.
Saturday 18th April 2009 - The Yorkshire Pullman - Kings Cross to York and return by Tornado hauling the VSOE British Pullman train.

For more information go to 'The Diary of Main Line Tours' page.

Im not really suprised (lazy) journo's are thinking its April 18th before her next trip - as well as a new host the website could really do with showing, clearly, all her forthcoming trips in plain sight on the homepage, while stating that their are many more to come all round the country. Fingers crossed, this publicity should be great for the trust's coffers.

Fantastic pictures and video clips from yesterday folks. It really was quite something. I had stuff to do at home so didn't venture up to London as I had intended to but kept the BBC news channel on in the back ground while I was working. 60163 departing Darlington featured regularly and then at about 14.15 they went live to Kings +. The BBC cameraman even had to move to a new position as the platform was so packed. There were a few errors in the reporting but overall it was great footage. I just couldn't believe how many people were there. I think the Heritage Railway movement has a new "Megastar!" Perhaps the interest in Tornado might help with 4472's case.
I can't wait until next Saturday. We are out to see 60163 on the lunch trip and then travelling on the evening dining run. I'm getting excited already.

With the KX-York tour postponed, I assume there'll be a light engine move some time between the 14th and 19th back up there?

Are there any details of this yet? (Or am I just being really obtuse and missing it on UKsteam.info or something?)

Look on the Loco Movements page:
    http://www.uksteam.info/tours/lem09.htm
On 16th Feb, there's a movement for "Tornado" (loco and support coach) from Hither Green to York, but no details yet.

Thats a bit mercenary dont you think ..

Personally if the A1 trust want any of mine, either here or in the Talisman thread I will gladly send the full size originals for all of them, not just the ones I posted and give them full use to... afterall I wouldnt have been there without them.

It is only mercinary if you are talking money.
I like many others have fallen to the charms and smooth words of Mr Allat and others and donated to This and other projects and i would find the oportunity to use a little leverage the other way too good to miss.
Yes i would Negotiate bitterly whilst the boot was on the other foot for a moment or two.
My opening bid would be a footplate ride but i would probably settle for a shed visit at a convenient time.
If anyone else says they wouldn,t use whatever they had to achieve the same i do not believe them. Who wouldn,t swap a picture to "Cab it" and take another picture of your son or grandson in the drivers seat.
It isn,t all about money but if thats as far as your mind stretches so be it!

Expecting some sort of gratitude form the Trust is not unreasonable, especially if it is a particularly great/difficult shot, but in polite society I would think it is normal just to wait to be offered. Thinking that the givee should be initiating 'negotiation' is what's pretty mercenary in my view.
