    Just to say - as an aside, we were driving to Sussex in Sierra Leone on Saturday night and heard a news report on the World Service of the run to KX. Really quite bizarre to hear the chime whistle so far from home, but great coverage!

    Being someone who lives in the South East, who rarely travels great distances and who was otherwise occupied last Saturday when Tornado ran to London, I have yet to set eyes on this splendid engine. I am very much looking forward to rectifying this omission this coming Saturday when she does the two circular runs round the Andover/Romsey/Southampton circuit and then round the "Surrey Hills" route in the evening.

    While an A2, an A3 and at least three A4's all visited LSWR metals in the 1960's (and an A3 and three A4's in the preservation era), am I right in saying this is the first time ever that an A1 has run on the Southern?

    You beat me to it! I was going to ask the very same question. I've a had a look in a few of my books and have yet to find a visit or mention of a visit of an A1 to the SR.

    Must be a tasty calendar Ralph, he's one of the best steam artists IMHO.

    I was art taught by another, Peter Owen Jones, who sadly died young, not that any of his talent rubbed off on me. Anyway, this is veering waayyyy off topic.
