Several years ago, soon after I started videoing, I bought a Fan Ciev tripod (yes and I had never heard of them before either) , from Photo Sense in Bolton.
Now it's served me well all this time, but I'm looking to replace it with something perhaps a bit lighter as it plays havoc with your airline baggage allowance.
Anyone got any favourites they would recommend?

Conversely, I am also looking for a new tripod but one that is the opposite of what Ralph wants.

I'm wanting something that is reasonably heavy to give a good platform for taking photographs at night or in poor light, particularly when positioning the camera on the vertical axis. The tripod I currently use is too light for this and the camera can't stay true to its axis.

I thought of that, but mine does not have the adjustable centre column that I would think that Neil wants for still work..

It really depends how much you want to spend, with tripods you usually get what you pay for.
I don't use a tripod very often but the one I have is carbon fibre and made by BENRO, it's strong, light and works a treat.
The thing I use most is a monopod, carbon fibre again and this I bought from FEISOL, brilliant quality and they also make tripods.

Thanks Stuart, the present one cost around £100, so that is the area I'm thinking of, it must be capable of taking the Manfrotto fluid head, aroung 1kg and bracket for two cameras with mic so in total almost 5Kg.

Ffordes often have great deals on Manfrotto gear. I bought two tripods from them recently that were ex-demo and less than half the new price. Worth seeing if they have something you're interested in / keeping an eye on for the future. I'm a big fan of Manfrotto gear, as they sell every single item as a spare part, so if something breaks you don't need to buy a whole new tripod.

Cheers Paul, I'll have a browse on their site when I have a bit more time...
