Well Eastleigh (Southampton) Airport already has a replica Spitfire at its entrance so it is appropriate.

Even though the majority of Spits were built at Castle Bromwich! Just thought Id throw that one in there!

But the Supermarine Spitfire will be forever associated with Eastleigh and Southampton as that's where the design was born and first took to the sky.

If only 34073 was in working order then get about BoB or WC to run as 34071 then you'd have 70-73 which would be a lovely sight it would and as a mention does anyone know if 249 squadron has any updates... Last I heard she had her boiler taken off her frames

Strengthens the hope that Colas Rail - with an engineering base at Washwood Heath adjacent to Castle Bromwich and a stabling point at Eastleigh - could name one of its Class 70/8s. The company has already acknowledged its Weardale / NE commitment by naming 66849 "Wylam Dilly" so a precedent has been set !

Still the case. We won't hear anything of it until it either emerges complete from Carnforth... or we just won't hear anything of it. It might be a rainy day project for when 34067 gets tired- don't quote me on that, though.

It is difficult to imagine a circumstance where 34073 would become a more economic prospect for restoration compared to overhauling 34067, except under the direst of situations.

Given its latest reported unavailability, one has to wonder whether 34067 will be wiser based at Carnforth once other locos in the WCR fleet are available for shedding at Southall. It seems a high maintenance engine and frequently gets sent back there.

Hence my speculative point. Don't get me wrong, I like 34067; it punches well above its weight when on good to top form, and want to get as much mileage as possible out of her (three trips I booked specifically because of the higher likelihood of getting Tangers resulted in no-shows), but there may well come a time when it might be cheaper to start afresh than to keep flogging it. In this respect, I like to think that 34073 is part of a 'strategic reserve' at Carnforth. Once again, this is only my own musing- I haven't a clue what will actually happen.

It shouldn't be that high maintenance, so either something is seriously amiss, or they're not doing things properly Oop there............ just guessing, not accusing.

I mean if I won the lottery I would buy 34073 and maybe dependant on the winning amount buy 35009 because these are two locos that have lasted this long so far so to give up on them now is a crime in my eyes I mean I'm only 20 but I like to think that one day I will own such a machine

I think if anyone had the dosh to buy a Bulleid. 35025 would be on that list as well. Remember it was part way through a restoration.

My dad threatened to use some of his pension money to purchase a non-working class 37 a few years ago. My mum ironed him and said he would be living in a box on the streets before she would let him do it!

Therein lies the flaw; NEVER tell the boss you are buying anything railway related :)

My boss gets grumbly every time she sees I've spent more than £100 on a model loco - let alone 5 figures for a broken 40 year old diesel loco!!

I'd love to be in a position to own a even small GWR tank loco, but for the meantime I think I'll stick to OO.

In the late sixties, £2.5k could buy you a fully working main line pacific - that's about £40k in today's money. For a tenth of that sum you could buy a fully working Andrew Barclay industrial not dissimilar to my Avatar! So the heritage loco business today is in an entirely different place and that is before you even start to consider the massive costs of restoration. It does help you understand, and appreciate, the human and financial commitment needed from the majority of groups that have started with somthing less than perfect but will eventually get it to steam again one day.
