Don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but Beamish museum are in the process of building a replica of 'Samson', a Lewin loco that was scrapped in 1905.
I believe there is only one photograph and two inaccurate engravings of the original!

Well, I've emailed them (in English as my Czech is a tad rusty) and will post a reply if I get one. They list a range of O&K locos from 10 HP (!!) up to 50 (though that's 750mm gauge). They appear to have built a 40HP model, maybe not yet the others?

Anyhoo - maybe the 10HP versions will be cheap enough for us all to get one each and use them to ride up and down our favourite lines out of season ;) Might be powerful enough to just about pull itself.... :D

The 30hp model is presumably the prototype for the Barclay E Class which they built under licence from O & K, including No 6 Douglas (AB 1431/1918) on the Talyllyn Railway. In the war they carried on building the locos but stopped paying the royalties! Ironically it was built for the Royal Naval Air Service.

I believe that Dusty Durant from South Africa had already had an NGG17 design drawn up if I recall it was a 2-8-2 + 2-8-2 design

Can't see any mention of the replica Bagnall 'Polar Bear' being built on the GGR ('Brown Bear'). Luckily the original is available for comparison, especially given that the real thing has some interesting differences to the original drawings..

Should go nicely with their 'Sea Lion' replica..

.....except that Sea Lion isn't a "replica"! It's had 3 replacement boilers and even new frames but it's no more a replica than many other C19th locos. Ray.

Sorry, an Amberley joke. As we like to say 'there's more Sea Lion in Polar Bear than Sea Lion' ;)

No offense taken - I must admit that when I re-read the post I wondered if it was an 'in' joke. Cheers, Ray.

    The Kolin locoworks have replied.
They point out that prices vary according to options and required paperwork from different countries.
However, their smallest O&K would be around 100K Euros, and the 40 HP 0-6-0 would be between 140-160K Euros.

So, a brand new O&K 40 HP is only about 3 times the price of the unrestored Elsa ....

Different markets though, surely? A preservationist is unlikely to be interested in a new loco. A tourist line or theme park might well prefer one. I doubt many potential buyers would be choosing between the two.

........and the Corris ? ....Nothing wrong with building a new old locomotive providing the original drawings are followed.......Happy New Year to all.

Corris. L&B. In both cases, surely, they are only building new locos because the originals are not available to be restored? In an ideal world would they not rather have an original?

And no, nothing wrong at all.
