if you want a concrete mixer then I'm sure you'll get one from Jewsons cheaper than building an L1. :)

Not sure if the L1 was really the most successful design, apparently they had a recurring problem with overheating axleboxes that was never properly resolved? A Gresley V1 or V3 might be a better bet. Or how about a Robinson A5 or Raven/Gresley A8?

Someone was looking to newbuild a standard 77xxx. There was a thread about it last year. Looks like the idea's died a death though.

Not so! Even I'm supporting this one, after all, the originals were built at Swindon!

Slow and steady start with lots to do but the people behind this are talking to the right people and your post has reminded me that they're due another donation from me. As the last "missing Standard" its a must and, I would suspect, a useful loco for many heritage lines with its Class 3 designation and light axle loading. Not the most beautiful loco but eye of beholder and all that.

If my numbers come up, a BR 77 mogul would be under consideration along with my 2 previous daydreams mentioned earlier, as would 82046 ( just so we could have 1 Green, 1 Black it might stop some livery froth!)

Good to hear that. Yep, they're ugly little devils but just what most lines need. Even Mr Hitch might agree.

A block rebuild of the whole class perhaps? ;)

As long as the A1SLT Built Tornado as close as poss to the original spec. it was always likely to work as did the original design.
With the P2 Whole chunks of the original design have been replaced either with evolved equivalents from other locomotives or enhanced by themselves in the direction of later practice. On this principle ( and it will be a few years before the pudding can be proved) even Locomotives that we're a bit of a pig originally (L1 for instance ) can be 'put right'. Not withtanding that 250 tonnes at 25mph isnt hard work for a lot of classes

I think a certain one off (71000) has shown just what can be done, certainly for a loco that was a 'bit of a pig' just shows what can be done with a bit of vision. (And checking drawings!)

Uncork the bottle and, abracadabra, the genie appears!

Certainly they are ugly as sin. If sin were this ugly in reality, virtue would certainly triumph.

Yes, they are the right size but so is the tank engine version and the latter is prettier. Just help the people at Bridgnorth to finish theirs in a timescale that allows them to see it run before they fall off the twig. Then use the accumulated experience to build your own. Don't start a thing before more projects get done or at least demonstrate beyond doubt that they are no hopers which just tie up money.

If you are seeking a really ugly prototype to build, how about the G.W.R. "Krugers"? These had the added advantage of being very unsuccessful which should appeal to a certain sort of gricer.

Not at all. We have had several inauthentic liveries over the years so view a 77xxx as a blank canvas and let your creative juices flow. :)

Now, if a couple of the Class had been allocated to sheds on the Western Region I am sure that Swindon would have given them the green treatment.

Standard 3s look no worse than Standard 4 2-6-0s IMO. I like the rugged quality and post-war simplicity in their looks.
