A "No" would seem to be pretty definitive. "Maybe" would seem to cover almost everything else: restoration to running condition is possible in principle, without having to throw away (or store) too many of the existing parts; but whether it will ever happen depends on all those factors that Anthony mentions. I take "Yes" to imply a definite intention, albeit with an indefinite date. There can't be many instances of "Yes" but it's good to know that there are some.

I'm afraid you interpret me wrongly.

    No is indeed no.
Yes is "we would have no problems in principle with the vehicle operating again".
Maybe is a case of "needs deeper research, discussion and investigation", could result in yes or no.

Yes an 0395 would be good. Is there one still out there in the Syrian desert I wonder? They were ancient when I was young!

You made me doubt, so I dug out a Beyer Peacock publicity book containing most of their Garratt designs, dated 1947, which refers to the LMS Garratts as 2-6-0+0-6-2. Most of the double bogie types got trailing trucks when they got big enough, see these 2-6-2+2-6-2 'Modified Fairlies' (which were North British making things that looked like Garratts but didn't violate the patent) and these curious 0-6-2+2-6-0 locos, which I can't make sense of at all. On a Mallet the articulated power unit is the leading truck guiding the fixed frame, so intermediate trucks would be pointless.

I don't want to be held responsible for anyone disappearing down the rabbit hole of bizarre articulated locomotive types. That way lies madness.

0395s--- yes, 70 built, 50 sent to Palestine and Mesopotamia during WW1 of which four sunk en route. The last one (30567) was 76 years old when scrapped in 1959. I suspect it was the oldest tender loco in BR stock at that point, anyway the older ones I can think of like A1X,0415, 0298, North London etc were all tanks.

Thank you for the clarification. I had indeed interpreted "yes" to mean that those locos are likely to be restored, some time, rather than Yes they could be but it may or may not ever happen. But I don't see the difference on the "maybes". Whether they can ever be restored depends on all the factors you mentioned in post #80. If and when restoration of a particular one is contemplated, all those factors will need to be considered.

Thanks for looking. I had a look at Binns book on Kitson Meyers and all those without a trailing truck are referenced as (e.g.) 2-6+6-2 and, if they have a truck, as (e.g.) 2-6-2+2-6-2. There were also some 0-6-2+0-6-2 tender Meyers built by Beyer Peacock which would be difficult to describe if the middle zero was left out! Mind you, these locos are difficult to describe, in any case. They are referred to as 0-6-2+0-6-2 but, if so, the 'front' starts with an 8 wheel bogie tender, followed by the smokebox, boiler, cab and coal bunker on a rigid frame with the two 0-6-2 power bogies with a cow catcher at the rear. I would describe them the other way round, as 2-6-0+2-6-0 but that puts the chimney at the back!

Right... in case I'd be able to make an approach over a locomotive a few years from now, depending how my current project proceeds, would you be willing to send this to me?

Also, which loco has its original tubes in it? To be honest, I'm not sure how much I personally would care about that, boiler tubes are just boiler tubes... am I correct in thinking that a retube is mandatory for a new ticket to be issued?

Just somehow I cannot imagine Mr Coulls would be willing to have that list quoted back to him in a few years. I certainly wouldn't were I in his position.

As I understand it, the NGG16s have quite a bit of weight on the pony wheels to drop the axleload, all good and well in South Africa but a big chunk of wasted adhesion weight in North Wales.

I at first meant load, ie see what a loco could do. After missing out on Merehead 150 with 5197, I'm waiting for the day we can try one of our S160s on the Cauldon Branch with a 10/12 coach train (and we'll have 10 operational by March...)

Loco's I'd like to see steam though, the D36 Glen Douglas is right up there.
GWR Star would be nice to, being a GWR fan. 9017 would also be constantly serviceable if it were left upto me too!

If only! 10 coaches (maybe should of said serviceable), though the aim is for 2x S160s in 2015 at CVR. With 5820 and 3278 coming into service that's 4...

Obviously it would be unfair on you to ask which were the 'maybes' and which the 'yeses', but I'd be interested to know which are the definite 'nos'.
