The Yorkshire Dales Railway had the rolling chassis for Hunslet 0-6-0ST Coronation, 1810/1937, which was used as a source of spares for sister locomotive Airedale. Once suitable items had been removed I believe the remains were scrapped in the 1980s.

In the late 60's the Merseyside Model Railway Society (or some of its members) bought an 0-4-0 saddle tank called 'Salmond' from the chemical industry in Runcorn or Widnes. They subsequently couldn't find a home for it & it was scrapped.

A third fireless loco from Laportes went to Quainton in 1970 (Andrew Barclay 0-4-0F 1493), but the Quainton Railway Society never had ownership. It went for scrap the same year.

Yes I got what you meant after I had posted. It was bought by the Strathspey to try and make 2 Ivatts from 46428, 46464 and 46512 which meant swapping a few boilers around. It never happened and probably was never realistic and the railway sold it when short of cash one winter.

Not quite correct Neil. 46428 was purchased for a replacement boiler for 46464 after someone decided to light a fire in 46464 when there was very little water in it. However, the damage sustained was not as bad as expected and 46428 was sold on.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I seen to remember when 178 first came to the Bluebell being told that what made it attractive and a worthwhile addition (when we already had 2 Ps, and the railway actually was staring to feel the need for larger locos) was the amount of spares that it came with. I don't recall anyone saying that it wouldn't be restored. It was not a priority in those days, and restoration only started after a change of ownership, only for ownership to change back and restoration completed under the Bluebell. The spare (new) cylinders ended up, I think, on Bluebell, and I've no idea which boiler is which now - there was, I think, a spare that came with 178.

There is some truth in that but it also involves 46512's boiler which was not thought to be restorable at one point IIRC.

Hi Bob, that does ring a bell, I think a fellow called Mike Clarke was involved. I'm sure I had a press cutting (with photo) from the Echo at one time. The loco was Hawthorn Leslie 2448 of 1899 but I can't remember where the loco came from either. I wonder if the Echo archives would produce anything.
    All the best, Ray.

Possibly, though I suspect over the course of 45 years, there's a bit of a grey area between "acquired for spares" and "acquired for the spares"!

There are indeed 4 boilers between the three engines, though only two good ones now - when 27 is restored, she will either need a new boiler or a substantially new one. Still, glad 178 did get restored, though she now needs a new cylinder block.

As well as the famous broad gauge locos "North Star" and "Lord of the Isles" the GWR also scrapped the Shrewsbury and Chester 2-2-2 no 14 of 1848, preserved at Wolverhampton until 1920 (Churchward again?) and Llanelly Railway's rather unusual Hackworth 0-6-0 "Victor" of 1864 was preserved as a curiosity at Swindon until 1889.

When I first looked at the list on info@railuk.info there were well over 50 locos identified as preserved but subsequently scrapped. I was able to discount a few which were mis-identified and a further few which I was pretty sure were never truly 'preserved' . This brought the list down to about 36 industrials plus the ex main line locos that we have discussed in previous posts. There are, however, a number of entries where the information is incomplete/doubtful and I should like to ask members if they can add any additional information or simply confirmation to the following:
AB 851/99 0-4-0ST ex NCB Newbattle No28 pvd SRPS later scrapped.
AB 1651/19 0-4-0ST ex BSC Holwell Notts No17 pvd where? Then scrapped.
    AB ? /42 0-4-0ST 'Fina' ex British Gypsum Cocklakes. Scr @ S&CR.
AE 1800/18 0-6-0ST 'Percy' ex Avonmouth Docks. Scr @ Princes Wharf Bristol, Was it actually 'preserved'?
HL 2448/99 0-4-0ST 'Salmond' abortive attempt at preservation on Merseyside. Where did it come from? BICC Prescot July 1966 then stored @ ICI Gaskell Marsh - presumed scr.
HC 1316/19 0-6-0 ST ex Ravenglass and scrapped. That's all we have on this.
HE 1589/29 0-6-0ST 'Newstead' ex NCB Woolley. Pvd by a Mr Saul in Ware, went to Suffolk Steam Traction 1990 but returned to Ware 1991 and scr 1992.
P 2088/48 0-4-0ST "ex Tyseley and scrapped for spares" That's all we have.
P1393/13 0-4-0 ST 'Mars II' ex Staffs C.C. Darlaston. Presumed scrapped? Is this misidentified for RSH of same name @ Snibston?
    And a real mystery;
WB 3090/56 2-6-2T 'Campbell' (2'g.) supposedly scr near Andover - any info?

'Hope some of you can help. Cheers. Ray.

It's an interesting analogy that Tom has given but (and apologies if this strays off subject) are there any cases where the sole surviving aircraft of it's type is a flyer? I have wracked my brains albeit for only a few minutes and cannot think of one. I suppose another consideration is that it could be argued that a sole surviving plane is more valuable than a sole surviving steam locomotive as they latter isn't going to fall out the sky if it fails!

The problem is that many members of this forum seem to regard 4771 as some sort of 'holy grail' and will not rest until it is back in steam.

Leaving aside the operational needs of preserved railways; if you can see and hear one or two Castles working do you realy need to see another? (I suspect adherents of 'other' railways might extend that argument on the mistaken basis that all GWR 4-6-0s look alike! )

Also regarding the locos listed, could a loco really be regarded as 'preserved' just because it was on the premises of a preserved railway? (I'm particularly thinking of the early days of railway preservation)

Oh and another one for the list: an Eastern Counties Railway Bury single was apparently displayed on a plinth outside Stratford Works at one time.
