Split spoke wheels, not that unusual?

Not quite unique, I'm afraid! It's an ex GER underframe, probably from a 10 ton van built between 1885 and 1902. The Great Eastern favoured Mansell Patent spoked wheels and fitted them to most goods stock right up to the grouping. We have 2 vans of this type at Mangapps, plus 1 earlier (1881) example, 2 later, long (10" 6') wheelbase ones, a flat ( ex open) and a LT&SR Vacuum Cleaner Van, all with this type of wheel-set. All, that is, except one of the long w/b examples, which has standard 3 hole disc wheels. This is because, in the 1930s the LNER opened Whitemoor Marshalling Yard, then the most modern hump yard in Europe. Unfortunately, the wagon retarders used in hump shunting tended to catch the rivets on the Mansell wheel rims, either damaging or derailing them. This was rather awkward, as Whitemoor was in ex GE territory, where there were still thousands of Mansell wheels in service. The result was that most ex GE wagons that remained in mainline service got new wheels.

Glad to hear that there are a few of these oddities around :) & that LTSR van is absolutely superb - any plans for it?

It's certainly an odd one- like a low-mac crossed with a gunpowder van! As to plans for it's future, we obviously intend to conserve it, but exactly how far to go is currently a subject of debate. It is very rusty, but the underframe is in good order and the body frame and roof is intact. The sheet work is 90% intact, but wasted in places, mainly along the joints. Judging by photographs of the vehicle "as new" in 1912, it is in remarkably original condition, but if we replace the sheeting, we shall destroy much of the original 1912 vehicle!
At present it is kept under cover, though whether this can be permanent is problematical, but it is now well dried out and can therefore be thoughly cleaned. We shall probably then replace the larger sections of wasted metal, coating the remainder with rust treatment. This should protect it in the medium term, but the longer term intention is to house it indoors and use it to display museum artifacts, possibly LT&SR items-if we can find enough!

Out of curiosity, what was a vacuum cleaner wagon for? I have a vague recollection of seeing a photo on an LBSCR one, so obviously they were more than a one off! But what were they for?

According to George Dow, in his "London, Tilbury & Southend Album", it was for cleaning upholstery and removing dust in carriages.

Hey chaps, I managed to grab a few pictures of the wheels and axleboxes on the 'weedkiller wagon' at the BHR.
Does this shed any light on it? David says the wagon is ex-Purton.

Definitely ex-GER with Mansell open spoke wheels. The axle-box is an LNER replacement, LNE-E denotes Great Eastern section. The wagon's underframe will be stamped with it's number, look at the right hand end of the wagon, above the right vertical strut of the "W" iron (you may need a scraper!) The first digit will be a 6, which is the LNER prefix for ex GE stock, the following digits will be the original GER running number.

Rather nice that, hope someone takes it on. Sadly one large Weltrol restoration is enough for me at the moment!
