As the NRM will be very impressed with 34051 perhaps they could be persuaded to allow 850 to change colour to a darker shade of green?
Or allow 925 to be outshopped in black.......

I cant see them painting 850 now when she has so little time left in traffic, however I believe there is a strong rumour that she is due to return in BR Green!

925 in Wartime or BR lined black? When was the last time a schools was seen in Lined Black?

Far better to keep both loco in their current livery. Which helps the general public to distinguish them has being NRM loco's. But I wouldn't mind seeing them both being turned around. To be facing out of Alresford.

It's only a rumour, and has been for a very long time - so don't hold your breath!

As for 925, give her at least 5 years before even thinking of it........ ;)

Last Schools i saw in lined black was 'Haileybury' at Folkestone Central on 'The Man Of Kent' at Folkestone Central in July 1959. Never saw another black one in East Kent.

Cant understand the fascination with BR liveries myself, I much prefer the Southern colours that 850 and 925 are in now. Anyway 850 wont change colour before next overhaul (it would waste valuable running time for one thing). I struggle to imagine 925 changing livery before next overhaul either assuming that the owners were to permit either to change livery of course.

For some of us, it's not a fascination with BR liveries per se, just a desire to see authentic- looking trains. If 850 or 925 were Bluebell-based, where there are plenty of pre-1948 coaches in service, SR livery would be fine, although personally, I'd prefer Maunsell livery on 925. The point is that the Mid Hants runs virtually nothing but Mark 1s and a pre-1948 liveried loco hauling Mark 1 stock does nothing for me. OK, I'm only speaking as a photographer. If I'm riding on a train, it doesn't matter two hoots what livery the engine is painted in as I can only hear it and not see it.

I've always wondered if I'd visit a gala, would I hear these photographers actually grumble about the liveries...?

Plus would I find them somewhat... alone?

On a serious note, I can see why it would bother some. I myself actually prefer the pre-1948 liveries though, and it would seem that most of the general public tend to favour them too (though I'd prefer matching appropriate stock to go with them definitely).

For me I'm just glad to see 850 and 925 working on MHR metals.

    BR green or black.

    Dull.

Why the obsession? Its so refreshing to see anything other than BR liveries!

Nellie and Cheltenham look great as they are and long may they continue to fly the flag for the Southern! I couldn't believe the transformation when I saw Sir Lamiel in Malachite- how much more pleasing must it be for the public to see something that isn't dull black or green!

Can't wait to get down to the Bluebell to see all pre BR Finery!

You'd better get down there quick! Next engine back in steam is the Q class, which is going to run as 30541 for its first year in service. Next comes 73082, which can only carry BR livery and 34059 (ditto) is supposed to return next year. Still, at the moment, you're 100% safe. :)

Crikey! :Nailbiting: I didn't mean to turn this thread into a "livery debate" :Joyful:

I simply suggested a change of livery for either 850 or 925 might be an idea in the future as the MHR has proved again what a grand job they can do with one of the nations railway locomotive icons.
I will admit I am not keen on 850 in her current livery but it's great to have her in action. Surely for her next overhaul she could go into BR Green or perhaps even SR black which they carried in service? I would imagine there would be renewed interest in her and a lot of Photo Charter work plus she would be in demand for Gala events. She has carried her current SR livery since 1979.
925 looks great in any livery to me. One of my favourite loco's since she has been on the MHR.

Yes and 850 looked rather fetching on the main line with any stock in tow. If you are a heritage line, my guess is that the public will easily outnumber the enthusiasts. And there's not much doubt that they will be quite happy to see locos in different liveries. It's an attraction so why waste the opportunity? That said, with rebuilt Bulleids it's simple....green.

This thread seems to have gone off the beaten track!
Going back to Bulleid's, can anyone tell me when 35027 is due back into traffic?;)
Also does anyone know if much has been done to 34016 since she left the MHR?

850 and 925 should look great behind the three Bulleid coach set in a few years time.

Has any work been carried out on 35027?
34016, bit of a daft question, seeing that it is at WCRC Carnforth. Next time we will hear about Bodmin is when it is in Carnforth station for its test run.
