With how it will finally appear once completed, its great to hear the NRM have chosen the most authentic identity. If general public want to cry or moan that its not appearing as they thought, then let them and give them a history lesson. The thing that has struck me most is that if it wernt for Alan Pegler, there would be no loco preserved, and with his sad passing in recent years i think its a tribute to him appearing in the same condition to how he took it on and where the the preserved Flying Scotsman story first started....

if the single chimney and blast pipe were availible thats the time to put it out as 4472 in apple green, they are not, at the moment, it has to look authentic to carry the prewar livery , it has the BR era modifications, so its right that it apears in a livery that matches with that era.

Why is a reproduction of the livery it carried when owned by British Railways more historically authentic than a reproduction of the livery it carried when owned by Alan Pegler?

I don't think so. He was probably ready with his tins of Class 5 black.

To remember the loco WORKING as 4472 in Apple Green livery, you have to be at least 80 years old. I applaud this idea and IMHO, Brunswick Green suits the A3s better than Apple Green did.

I don't mind paint wars when BR Green Black or green are selected. 45690, 46100, and now a 60103 dissapointment instead of being 4472 regardless of accuracy. The red of 6100 though looked more pinkish . I just like the color wheel and there isn't enough of it out on the mainline at this moment.

to me, its all to do with the changes the loco had from its LNER guise, it will when it returns to service have the BR double chimney and smoke deflectors, these give it a different external outline than the single chimney version so to paint it anything but BR express loco green will not be in keeping with its external condition.

At least you can be fairly sure it will carry apple green again at some point. My personal favorite would be light blue, with red lining, and a great big yellow number 4 on the tender.

Good decision and the only valid one that could be made in its current condition, well done the NRM. The vast majority in social media world also agree and there is at last building excitement about the return rather than the usual bitter uninformed debate about why restore the loco at all. Hopefully we can draw that chapter to a close and spend some time enjoying seeing this icon back on the mainline, I can't wait to take many shots of her under York roof in the coming years :)

Rubbish, when the news crews turn up they will see a green steam engine, they will only know which it is because of the name plates, Apple green, Brunswick green, grass green, Atco green, doesn't make the slightest difference to them as they don't know any different.

Unfortunately right on the button given the quality of contemporary Journalism ' The flying Scotsman train is wearing the green it had during the war, which deflects double the amount of german smoke ( or something...)'
Youre average well informed punter though ( 8 year old boys with train sets ) however will be well pissed-off... one nil to Tornado.

Good grief, what is it about a lick of paint?..........

I didn't knock it up, just nicked it off t'interweb! ;)

If we're going to get all "frothy" over colours, why not paint it pink with blue spots & tell the kids Mr Blobby's bought it.......... o_O

Hells Bells at the end of the day its a coat of paint, and what ever colour it is, it all looks the same to a blind man - just be grateful the old girl is getting ever closer to a mainline return! :)

Don't worry. There will be no debate as a decision has been made. In my view it is the right decision and whilst some will be disappointed, they can get over it.
