Is it possible for someone involved with the project to 100% clarify the identities of the carriages and which are the three currently at Eastleigh Works?

The three that had been kept undercover on Hayling Island for many years in the opinion of myself and the VCT were
    LBSCR 174 http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=2603
    LBSCR 660 http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=288
LBSCR ??? (presumably now identified as 1646) http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=4904

It being these three that were moved to Eastleigh Works recently and as such are the three to be fully restored.

The fourth which has been stored elsewhere on the island for many years exposed to the elements was LBSCR 521 http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=286 It being presumed from what has been said that this has/is being dismantled in situ on the island. Is this correct?

It is of course possible some confusion has arisen as to which is which.

Also with LBSCR 521 was the chassis/underframe of SR PMV 1461 http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=416 It is presumed that this is the one that has arrived at the Mid Hants. Can that be confirmed?

It is indeed hard to see how these will fit in, it would be like LNER teaks on, say, a GWR branchline...

Last year in March I went to in Pepe's Boat Yard, saw and took pic of SR PMV 1461 and LBSCR 521. And I not sure what trolley was?

30+ years ago members of my group raided two coach bodies at a factory on the Island.... no interest in them otherwise in those days and quite out of the question for us to take them complete...how things have changed on the MHR

Look at this from another view. Will the general public really care if the wrong loco is pulling these coaches. I would think most of them would be more than happy just to ride in them. By the way once these coaches have been overhauled there could always be a chance they could be hired out to another railway for a event/gala weekend. Maybe one day they could visit the Bluebell or the IOWSR.

I cant help but be slightly irritated by some of the posts here. You don't have to look far in this forum to find criticism of the MHR for not having vintage carriages. We don't have the benefit of having been in a financially secure enough position to do anything about that when there were pre-nationalisation and pre-grouping carriages to be had in numbers. We are addressing that by building a 3 car Bulleid set and now we can augment the collection with these fine vehicles too. However, now we have this opportunity - which we haven't had before - apparently they "wont fit" and would be better off somewhere else, and anyway we probably wont know how to look after them. We have long wished to have vintage carriages on the MHR. These operated on the Hayling Branch and we are the closest preserved line to that branch.

did they operate on the Hayling Branch or were they just taken to Hayling to be holiday homes? Can you link to info that they were used on the branch?

    Hello,
I have found no criticism,in fact the opposite.
Some possible future issues have been highlighted.
Bit of tongue in cheek re Bluebell/IOWSR!

i can see what the post by the MHR meant, its 521 that’s being stripped, not 660, and looking at 521, it not in any way restorable when i looked at the photos of 660, it looked in good order, and i couldn’t understand why it was being broken up

@21B , no criticism of the MHR was intended in my posts and apologies if any were . That these vehicles are going to be restored is good news and I'm sure as other railways have found (with similar vehicles) they will be very popular . Hopefully they may be a further catalyst to restoring the Ironclad that is on the line as well

    hi Reading General,
large numbers of ex-LBSCR and other carriages were sold off in the 1920s as holiday chalets cheaply all over the south coast but particularly Hayling Island, the Witterings, Selsey and IOW. there are lots of pics of this process at the time - the bodies already having been removed from the chassis and transported on carts.
    cheers,
    julian

See for example photo 11 on this page, taken at Havant (the branch junction for Hayling Island). The leading brake coach with guards duckets, a pair of windows/doors and then six plain panels, is very similar in appearance to No. 174. Photo 13 is similar.

Interestingly some carriages from the Isle of Wight were sent to the mainland for scrapping, presumably as return loads when newer vehicles were delivered. The frames were scrapped but some of the Isle of Wight bodies were sold and ended up on Hayling Island. The first 4 wheeler that the IOWSR restored (IWR 46 ex North London Railway) was found on Hayling Island and returned to the Isle of Wight in the mid70s At least two other IWR vehicles, not yet restored, were also found there.

What was it with the North London Railway? Their second hand carriages seemed to end up everywhere.

Probably because the bodies are teak framed and panelled, most of the panels on our ex NLR coach 6336 built in 1864 are the original teak ones. This coach is part of our 4 wheel set.
