Excellent ! Shap did kind of got the better of it at one point as seen the speed started dropping into the low 20's, but gained it before the summit.

The return however, more than made up for it !

Great day out, obviously Shap was not to her usual standard, reports were of dragging brakes as we seemed to reduce speed rapidly at one point. Ais Gill however made up for it with a faultless climb, Stephen's videos showing that admirably. The last climb, Whilpshire, was also spectacular and almost a case of 'What Bank'.....

Totally agree with everything said there, a fantastic day out, topped off with those thunderous ascents of Ais Gill and Langho. Onboard video crossing Ais Gill & Ramsgreave summits to follow at some stupid hour of the morning, along with shots of Sunset in Dentdale & the Blackburn departure (the shot I took on Shap was unusable because of wind noise).

Footage of those thunderous ascents of Ais Gill & Langho, along with Dentdale at sunset and the departure from Blackburn. Unfortunately the level of wind noise in places was unavoidable, since I don't currently have the money to spare to invest in better camera equipment...

Great footage, hope to some good clips on next weeks run. How do you keep your handheld shots of out the window so stable, usually when I do it at up to 75mph I'm all over the shop...

Well, the Duchess didn't disappoint yesterday and neither did the spectacular scenery and weather conditions. And for those on board we had the best of all worlds. On the northbound run there was the unexpected real life simulation of what it must have been like to take a load of 14/15 over Shap unassisted. And on the return we breezed up Ais Gill making light of the schedule and 46233 finally dismissed Langho with a shrug of her metaphorical shoulders.

Straight out of Carnforth with none of the usual tentativeness up to Yealand Summit. And so it continued to Grayrigg. 41 through Oxenholme and still the right side of 30 by Grayrigg. The onwards passage was unusually slow but not because of any apparent issue with the loco and we were only travelling at 64 through Tebay. The speed dropped quite quickly over the passage of a mile by about 15 mph but then over the next mile by a half of that. Thereafter she settled down to a confident blast up to the top with a minimum of 23 just before the summit. I was at the back and did just check that those lovely people at Carnforth hadn't popped an extra three coaches on the back while we were changing over in the loop so as to avoid us showing up the 10A stable too much. But no, it was just a 'heavy' train, as described by the crew.

Coming southwards was a delight and the Duchess sounded on top form. Well up to line speed by Armanthwaite and the whole journey to Appleby was capably managed in and around permitted speeds apart from the ongoing TSR through Culgaith Tunnel. Early at Appleby and early away. Then a tour de force to the summit. Over the top at 42 and there was always the sense that more would have been possible had Steve Chipperfield and Nigel Barber chosen to ask a little more of her.

Although we were early approaching Whalley, we just missed getting held by the service train from the other direction so it was a clear run through the station and over the viaduct with, as I hinted, a dismissive climb through Ramsgreave at 30.

Well done to everyone - crews and loco support - for yesterday. And I'm sure that everyone on board on future trips will be pleased that Carnforth are keeping their lovely locomotives on shed for a while longer so that everyone can enjoy Shap and Ais Gill the way it should be done.
