Proposal to replace Butts bridge at the MHR

    A few comments from a local. The replacement of this bridge makes sense at a number of levels. It is a potential bottleneck most of the day and at peak times it can become a nightmare with only cars able to pass under it. The route is an extremely important western bypass of Alton for north to south traffic especially anything wanting to get from Basingstoke onto the A31 or even further south onto the A3.

    The mini roundabout arrangement is messy and traffic flow will improve considerably with a proper roundabout just south of the new bridge as is intended.

    Like it or not, Alton is a popular place to live. House prices span the range of what you have to pay in Hampshire. The schools, almost without exception, are good (IMHO) and cater for all 'tastes'. The post 16 college is also popular.

    EHDC is under quite a lot of pressure to meet housing targets and Alton will have to take its fair share. Ditto for Alresford (although that is Winchester City Council). Given time I can see the railway line between Farnham and Alton being re-doubled with increased demand, inter alia, because of new housing and if they play their cards right, I'm guessing that one day the MHR might even find it viable to offer a daily passenger service up to Alton.

    So good news all round for the MHR especially if they talk to partners about the rail v road environmental issue.

    I have absolutely no problem with new houses, not even worried about the 500 proposed for Alresford PROVIDED that proper access is put in place! As I said, my kids would like to live in the local area (although I am a mere newcomer, having only lived in Hampshire for 32 years, 25 of those in Alresford, the next generation may be considered indigenous) and the only chance they will have is if new houses (with a percentage of affordable dwellings) are built here. However, currently 320 houses and an industrial estate are proposed for the field at the top of my road with only a "one-way" new access road off the A31. The majority of the traffic will access the new sit via a lightly built residential road that already struggles to deal with peak traffic flow at school-kicking out time. A proper two-way access of the A31 would require purchase of a "ransom strip" and the Mid Hants line prevents easy access from the "old A31" Bishops Sutton road, and the existing road from BS to Sun Lane in Alresford is very narrow and steep. No easy solution here.

    The replacement Butts junction bridge at Alton, along with changes to the A31 would seem to provide adequate infrastructure to facilitate access to the proposed new developments to the south of Alton, which can only be a good thing.

    Did you ever feel sorry for the person who looked over green fields before your house was built? Did you ever worry that moving to an AONB because you could afford it might be contributing to price escalation in an area where new building was restricted?

    9M sounds a lot of money but 500 houses at the average house price is 125M for the sales price, and could be more in that neck of the wood.
