A superb performance today from both locos, sounding absolutely phenomenal everywhere I went. Video to follow much later (when it's finished uploading) but for now here are the still pictures from today taken by my Dad.

A rather dreary afternoon on Copy Pit, but nevertheless great to see steam on this climb again, and Sough in the gloaming.

Had a wonderful day on the trip with a slightly early return to Preston.
Pictured here are the 'Fives' racing towards Dodworth having just thundered up the hill out of Barnsley then crossed Westbound over the M1 Motorway.

Haha :D many thanks John. I like your angle lower down - a grand view of the viaduct.

Hmmm... Dangerously close to my window... Anyway, solid performances on the many climbs, a very interesting route (particularly the stretch via Guide Bridge- not used all that often by steam) and plenty of rural and post-industrial scenery and in-compartment analysis of locos, life and universe to enjoy. Bar staff at the Tap were a bit rushed off their feet when a whole load of gricers descended upon them, but they didn't waste any time. Surprised by how many relics of the old GC survive.

A great day out, Mr Rileys locos, from a passengers point of view, performed faultlessly all day, all the notable climbs were taken with apparent ease, but the climb of Copy Pit was the outstanding one. They got dug in early on and never seemed to lose pace, not sure what the summit speed was but it certainly appeared pretty effortless. No doubt the firemen might say different... Well done to all those involved.
Good to meet so many of the regular passengers and put more faces to names
Then there are thanks to all those who got to the line side or hill side to take such a fine collection of stills and video.

Linesider must once again take the mountain goat award..

A absolute fantastic day out yesterday. Full credit to Ian Riley, West Coast Railways & Railway Touring Company for organising a wonderful trip. Managed to get 1 and a half pints in at the Sheffield Tap before the return journey. To re-quote RalphW's comment, the climb up to Copy Pit was just superb.

Will have to start looking for locations now for 1st November.

Yes a very good trip. It confirmed that there is a strong market for an eight to ten hour day out with an attractive itinerary. The train was full and so were the platforms and hillsides. How many people came out to see the train? Must have been a thousand or more, over a hundred at Barnsley alone I reckon. Maybe just a few will decide they want to go on the Cotton Mill or the November run of the Tin Bath. First main line steam charter in West Yorks for over six months.

Yes, but... Would you get the same level of interest if the train ran once a month instead once every 18 months? I think a big part of yesterday's interest was the long time since the last one.
