I agree with your choices, but would put them in the reverse order, with Adams's delightful T3 first.

Of the more "modern" classes, that attempted to fill the loading gauge, there's nothing that combines grace and power quite like Gresley's masterpiece, the A4 - with full valences left in place, of course!

I'll go with that - A4 boiler and all. I'd prefer not to have the deflectors, but they were necessary, and at least give the result a rakish look

I do like an A3 with German Blinkers and a nice coat of Racing Green. As Lplus says gives them a nice purposful look. Really brings them into the late 20th century

But still I think that the straight lines and the way that smoke deflectors are slanted set engines like 6233 apart. I'm being very specific.

I could be more specific and say that they looked better as 'semis' with the rounded edge a nice counterpoint to the horizontal lines of the stepped running plate and smoke deflector ' bend'

For me I will go for a B12/3 or a Lizzie, both are just great to look at. If asked to pick a small Loco I have always liked the aesthetic of Bellerophon.

Caledonian_Railway_4-6-0_locomotive,_903_Cardean_(Howden,_Boys'_Book_of_Locomotives,_1907).jpg The choice for me is not a GWR design for once. Probably the most beautiful loco ever built and in a beautiful colour scheme - Perth Blue. New build anyone?

I think this is possibly my favorite. Not too big and not too small. Holcroft somehow got the lines just right, which is pretty impressive as he was mainly assembling from the kit of parts.

Very influential design as well of course.

There is something of beauty about the moguls.

Also I have to say there is something beautiful about a no nonsense freight locomotive... lots of candidates but the Churchward 28xx would possibly be my nomination.

Well, almost right - it took him until Mogul 2.0 for the SECR to completely perfect the breed! ;)

    It's got 6 wheels.
    It's an LBSCR classic.
There's an example in the NRM collection.
It's in improved engine green livery.
There can be only one winner.

    AND THIS IS IT!

Ha! Never saw that coming, did you? Seriously, look at it. How lovely is that?

I'm rather partial to this myself though I doubt anyone else is!

I don't think you can beat a number of locomotives on this thread, but my vote remains for this beauty.

In this livery and form, she has to be the world's most elegant 4-6-0. When matched with the appropriate teak stock on the NNR, she represents a truly authentic part of an authentic train too, running in the region she was built for. A perfect bit of preservation there and then some.
