There is work in progress on 4110. Some locos originally purchased as a "source of spares" are now working mainline. This is testamony to those who have developed and the repair, restoration and replacement of parts theat would have seemed "impossible" when hulks were reserved at Barry.

As others have noted these wouldn't convert to a pseudo4300.
The Large Prairies were perhaps the most confusing of GWR "standard" classes, because there were so many variations... Collett especially seemed to like turning out new varieties...

To attempt to clear things up a bit, GWR No2 and No4 boilers were much the same length, but the No 4 was larger diameter. They were orginally found on 4-4-0 classes, which gives the general size. The Bulldogs, amongst others, had the smaller No2, the Cities the No4.

To over simplify the Prairies and just talk about boilers:
Most large Prairies had the smaller and lighter No2 boiler including all survivors except 6106. The 5600 0-6-2 also had the No2.
    6100 and 8100 classes had a No2 variant pressed to 225psi instead of 200psi
3150 class (extinct) had the No4 (5 were rebuilt later with a 225psi No4 variant), as did the 4200/7200 8 coupled tanks and the 4300 Moguls.
There were various other complications, including some variant wheel sizes.

AIUI all had similar front ends, so in theory you could recreate the extinct No4 boilered 5'9 wheel engines fairly readily by playing mix and match with a 42. Whether there is in fact any work out there that could require the larger boiler might be another matter.

The small Prairies were entirely different with, I believe, few or no large components in common, although I believe quite a few of the smaller parts were standard right across all the classes.

I doubt there is such a need as the No.2 boiler is a very good steam generator.

I believe the boiler currently on 4160 is one of those originally pressed to 225 psi and fitted to a 61xx.

I don't get the "outright sale" but putting in pre-conditions such as "not for parts"

Sounds like an aspiration as much as a condition.

Reading between the lines I'm inclined to agree considering they state that they have had some offers already. Probably offers from groups that require it for spares so they are looking to see if there are other options.

If I wanted it for spares, I wouldn't tell then that when buying.

Just because 4110 is for sale doesn't necessarily mean a buyer is imminent, how long were 7760 & 4588 (both complete albeit out of ticket machines) on the market ?.

I'd like to think it has a working future somewhere though, are Large Prairies that much different to the much desired Standards 4 Tanks in terms of power and capacity ?.

Sounds to me as if its intended to put the selling price up.

Conversely if I thought something was only good for spares as a purchaser I might say that too as a lever to try and bring the price down.

Thank you for posting this. It's always good news when a loco with little chance of restoration is sold on to a group, individual or railway with the resources to give it a working future - albeit not for a few years according to the article. Given what a fine engine 4160 is, I'm sure 4110 will also look the part on the WSR and it is interesting to note that it was allocated to Taunton for a while in the 1960s - a particularly appropriate loco therefore. I hope that there are no plans to turn it into "9352"!

From what I have read, it will be restored to "as was".

Now, there is a Castle in need of restoration ............

Bit of a thread resurrection, but all the chatter about the sale of 4110 made me wonder if there had been any progress or change of situation with 4121 since?

I seem to recall that it was previously offered for sale. Opportunity for the 4110 group perhaps?

My understanding is that 4121 has a new owner , Its current status is unknown
