This was mentioned on another thread, but I thought people outside that thread might like to know...

92214 is to pose as classmate 92220 'Evening Star' at the GCR's 'Railways at Work Weekend'

    http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/special-events/railways-at-work-weekend-1819-april/

    Personally I like it.

No, sorry I don't see the point of this at all. I could understand it if the real 92220 didn't exist anymore but as she is currently residing at York it seems a bit silly. Most people will know it's not the real one.

Is there any suggestion that it is attempting to be the real one?

Reading the press release they are going to "introduce 92220 to a new generation". Members of the public attending the GCR will go home believing they have seen the last steam loco built for BR. Text below is from the press release:
"Now with the agreement of the NRM and the support of the locomotive owner, Cromwell Tools, 92214 (which is painted in the same distinctive lined Brunswick Green livery as its classmate) will assume the name and number of ‘Evening Star’ and a new generation will see a recreation of this icon of the 1960s. New nameplates will be constructed to attach to number 92214 for the identity swap, together with other detailed features such as small brass plaques commemoration 92220 as BR’s final steam loco."

I think a midnight visit to Llangollen m.p.d. with 5 gallons of black gloss is called for !

Has anyone else spotted the glaring omission for a convincing Evening Star clone ? (I'm sure you know what it is)

Indeed, not exactly a discreet detail on 92220 either, Swindon felt it important enough to be the only Standard so fitted due to it's significance, so it's not something that can be so easily ignored.

Sounds like a certain charter organiser will have to get the copper coloured paint out then.........

Personally, I much prefer to see the real thing, even if it is stuffed & mounted.

I'm ready with my tin when P&O enters our paint shop! :Wacky: (actually it's not coming in, much to my disappointment) The lack of a copper cap is rather significant, wonder if it will get changed for charters, or it'll just bo something that gets photoshopped on afterwards to a varying response...

I've no objections to any tempoary running as 92220 but just as long as it is just that and not permanent. Saying that it would be nice to see an Evening Star in steam even though its not the real one.

I can accept a harmless theatrical masquerade - that is good for the paying punters but sticking a plaque on it claiming to be the last build is shameless fraud

    That's appaling

But if they didn't, wouldn't it be half a job?

I might be in the minority but it really doesn't bother me when engines masquerade as their classmates, scrapped or not. As long as they don't appear at the same time together!

I agree on that score. Temporay renamings, renumberings and repaintings Im all for. But somthing saying this is somthing saying that its not dosn't sit quite right with me. How about if the plaques were reworded to say somthing like 'This locomotive is very similer to the last steam loco built by British Railways . This locomotive still survives although is not currently in steam and is at the National Railway Railway Mueseum York'. Im sure someone could come up with better wording than that though. Just a thought

MHR better get those valances back on 4464 quickly so they can reimagine it as Mallard. Sure the NRM would support that too!
Very crass. Hope the image rights have all been sorted.

And while they are at it, attach a plaque with laurel wreaths saying "On 3 July 1938 this locomotive attained a world steam record for steam traction of 126mph" but have a clarifying note of "Not really" painted on the inside of the valence ...

I'm not against this I just think it's a bit...weird! 'The nrm won't steam evening star so we dressed up ours, but we asked them and they were ok'

The owners can do what they like after all, but it's just...weird!

    Quite!
Owners have perogative of course, but its just a surprise the NRM are supporting this particular initiative. Surely they would have been better advised to direct the "new generation" to York if they want to see "this icon", amongst many others too.
As for the owners of 92214, it's their engine, but if they so desparately wanted to see 92220 in steam why not invest the money its cost to buy 92214? I'm sure the NRM would have welcomed it and the tax relief would probably be significant too. Then "new generations" could have seen the genuine "icon" rather than the fake.
