Correct, nothing has been decided, which would be clear to anyone reading the article. http://www.southern-locomotives.co.uk/News/news.html This explains why it does not make sense for SLL to stop overhauling its existing fleet and embark on a restoration project. The optimal solution would be some kind of JV with a third party with the space, staff and cash to do the restoration. Whether such a third party exists is a matter of conjecture.

Not sure of the detail, but it was finally owned by Messrs Taylor and Wood, who merged their ownership into SLL.

Mr Taylor is the "Norman" who gave his name to SLL's Austerity, which is running at Embsay these days.

I must admit I thought it was a report on one of your renowned photo charters being affected by poor light.

I would have thought that the restoration would cost circa 600 - 700k so I would not have thought it would sell for in excess of 80k given the value of a freshly overhauled locomotive.

How much did they have 249 squadron up for sale for and that never sold?

34073 was advertised in mags a few years back quoted as £400k or thereabouts...
didn't see any suggestion of a sale, despite the usual threats of "unless someone pays it will be scrapped".. Doubt a scrap man would pay the price with 1 zero less.

Correct. I recall being told by someone at the shed that it was then found that the aforementioned gentleman had had a new set of valve gear made... from sheet steel.

I still keep my cynical hat on. The costs of overhauls are getting larger and larger every 7-10 years. All you have to do is look at 34027 and 4472/60103.
As has been said above there will be a plethora of Bulleids running all over the country.
34010 would provide a good source of spares for 34028 and any other Bulleid. Three good cylinders, wheels and motion, boiler. I will reitertate my statement above. " you cant save them all"

It seems that SLL have reached the optimum number of locomotives they can deal with. Without going mainline, there's probably not a lot of call for 34010 on the heritage circuit. A shame, but it could still be a long-term project.

Would be of use to WCR either spares or repair.

Ah but according to someone connected to the owner of 34073, it was supposed to have 95% of the parts manufactured (including IKEA flat pack tender) to complete the rebuild. He could have been talking porkies of course!
That would make it worth more than a Barry wreck. £400K though? I don't think so.

I`m glad that 34058 eventually ended up at the MHR and at least one day will be restored. It was mentioned at one stage that Willie Bath was trying to get it moved to Swanage. If they cant restore 34010 now they certainly could not have done 34058 also.

It does indeed seem that SLL have reached their optimum fleet size.

With 4 Bulleid pacifics in service or under overhaul, 1 will eventually need a new boiler and under frame. So that's why they will keep 34010 as spares.

So where are they going to get a NEW boiler or underframe from? :)

I'm actually a bit sceptical about 34058 being overhauled, with 34007, 34105 and 35005 + their other impressive fleet I don't see 34058 being needed, therefore started for some time ?

I believe you are correct, some awkward questions are likely to be asked if she is used as a 'donor' for other Bulleids.

If Mr Bath wanted 34058, it was probably because it already had a substantial amount of parts accumulated for its restoration, so it would have been an easier project to deal with than 34010. Considering they (or 'we' for there are shareholders amongst us on here including myself) have put their money where their mouth is and got 34053, a near basket-case at the beginning, back into steam, I think we should be a bit more forgiving. At the same time, there probably will be a future for 34010 somewhere, just not in the next five years.
