Frickley Colliery WD 0-6-0ST - Its Fate?

    I photographed this loco at Frickley Colliery in 1973, but have been unable subsequently to find any info. Unfortunately I did not take note of the worksplate. Any help would be appreciated.

    According to the IRS, there were two No.5's at Frickley Colliery, VF 5296, which was only there for a short period in 1949 and HE 3593, which was new in 1950 but scrapped by 1969. I'm also fairly certain that 3593 wasn't an Austerity. This leads me to think that you have the wrong pit! VF 5296 was actually a Grimethorpe loco for most of its life and was certainly there in 1970. Frickley & Grimethorpe were fairly close so it would be easy to visit on the same trip out. The only niggle in this is that the buffer beams have double gussets, which a Vulcan Foundry loco wouldn't have, as they ween't fitted to WD locos. however, it has been to Hunslet for rebuilding so they might have been fitted there. I don't know when it was scrapped.

    Take a close look at those wheel tyres! I dread to think what would be said today but locos used to run like that, at times. Didn't do the P.way much good, though!

    From a little internet searching I think it was Vulcan 5293/1945 scrapped 05/1969

    5293 was Frickley No.3 and the loco is quite clearly No.5.

    Don't forget the two J94's which disappeared into RESCO works in Woolwich. in the early 80's. :) ID's unknown, but I was told one was called Spitfire.

    Respite n Gwyneth ex NCB Bickershaw. The latter was used for the Iron Duke replica. Former survives at RSR via NRM.
    Spitfire was scrapped by Derek Foster but parts were used to restore 3f 7298 I believe along with some from Rodney scrapped at the same time circa 1976.

    Interesting I have heard that story before. Out of very idle interest I know the Austerities were close cousins of the Jinty but what would actually fit 7298 other than injectors and cab fittings?

    Derick said he had the J94 rods stretched in a forge to fit. I bought original Jinty rods from Cheddleton of all places, and the rest was Supplied by HM Dockyard, during the run up to the Falklands War. :D

    Boiler fittings would all fit. ;)

    The Jinties at Barry were well stripped of motion by 1973 - Derby Museum had a lot for 'spares' and Barry Buckfield had bought 47493 just before Derek bought his. 47298 only had coupling rods on one side and no other motion. Although we got a pair of connecting rods from Barry there were no brasses or, IIRC, any complete straps. When Derek scrapped Spitfire and Rodney at Bickershaw one of the pairs of con rods was stretched 1 1/2" by Johnny Bronson at NCB Walkden workshops and the brasses adjusted to suit the Jinty journal. The Austerity big end was a much more robust job. We also used the Austerity injectors and combined clack/injector steam valves. Even the latter had to have converter pieces as the stud pitches are completely different. The direct steam brake valve was a Gresham & Craven off an Avonside, the combined vac/steam brake valve was an LMS original, the ejector was from S.Africa and I think the safety valves were new. I actually can't think of any boiler fittings that are interchangeable.
    Interesting that you got the spare rods from Cheddleton as I thought they went to the KWVR for their Jinty via Martin Ashworth but may not be remembering it correctly.

    We bought a set of our rods for 7324 from Barry Backfield, but when we cleaned them up, we had two from 7324, and a pair from 7406. This was OK, but after we bought the 4f, we had to find another set of rods. At that time, Cheddleton Were restoring 4422, and we bought what was supposed to be 44123s rods, but again, after cleaning we had two of 44123, and two of 7324's rods, so we ended up with the original rods for 7324 half a set of 7406, and 44123's. Later, I think we swapped 7406's rods for The missing 4123 rods at the GC. It was a long job, but we did end up with the original rods for the original engines, but the con rods, and inside motion were all new.

    One set of coupling rods which had fallen off a 4F at Barry actually went straight onto 47298, with a minor bit of work to the existing white metal. From memory she ran at Rocket 150 with this set of rods in place.
    One of the original slidebars is stamped S&DJR 25, which must have been a Derby works swap job.

    We went to the KWVR but they did not want to sell con rods, because they bent a set on their 4f, so I was told.

    All the missing motion is rumoured to be stashed at the MRT.
