For the avoidance of doubt, I didn't save it - it was saved!

Having seen it at Mangapps, I doubt it was off a Jinty. In the end, didn't people decide that it was a M&GN boiler?

As I recall, they took everything, and left the frames, wheels, and boiler. Why they never actually preserved the engine. was probably down to money and space in Kensington. I used to love the coal mine they used to have there. Last time I went there with the kids, it had gone all high tech, and the historical stuff was behind glass. It used to be very different. I bet the 1940's house in the IWM has gone too. :)

It was the Derby G6 boiler from M&GN class D 4-4-0 No.50, which was scrapped at Stratford in 1945. The smokebox is from a GER J15, F5 or similar and is presumed to have been fitted to the boiler when it was sold by the LNER for re-use at the timber factory. The chimney shown in the photo is from an 8F and was placed on the smokebox as being a more suitable storage place than sat on the ground! The smokebox is now cosmetically restored and is on display in the museum at Mangapps. It is now fitted with the chimney from (wait for it)..... a GWR pannier tank:eek:
