I think I am inclined to agree maybe opening as a peace of public transport but I don't think this will work as a heritage line to much competition for member volunteers.

I was saying this is not viable as a preserved railway so many others very close to it that struggle for volunteers and members.
Maybe best it is used as a cycle route or something rather than just left to decay.

Quite right Tom, I was told in no uncertain terms by the owners that there would be no steam on the site. I don't think its NSR, as they are all but defunct now.

Planning permissions in Radstock have allowed for railway re-instatement, but a cycling group in Frome have started taking up track (not sure if they're allowed to)! Think Somer Rail has to pull it's finger out and actually do something before all is lost!

Anyone who seeks to establish a heritage railway along this route will have no choice but to negotiate with Sustrans and its landowning associate, Railway Paths Ltd. So it is ill-advised and counter productive for people to go overboard slagging off these organisations since they hold all the cards and are held in good esteem by many people for the work they've done in creating traffic-free cycle routes.

    Hello,
    Slagging off?
    If you say so.
A bit of research will throw up many anomalies re Sustrans.
Good job I amended my post......was very critical of said quasi governmental department.

Sustrans' claims that it is a "green" organisation and that it promotes sustainable transport are bogus. With one or two exceptions Sustrans routes are used overwhelmingly for leisure. Cyclists often drive for many miles with their bicycles on their cars to enable a ride along a Sustrans route from Nowhere to Where's That.

Such niceties are conveniently ignored by HMG as Sustrans enable them to tick a box, thus showing off their 'green' credentials.

Having taken my children cycling along it on Wednesday, I suggest that there are enough trees growing through the track to keep me in firewood for years..............

On the other hand a 'velo rail' might be an interesting idea...............

Rather mixed messages. I think it's intended to be a normal passenger branch but already the fb page is riddled with steam references and irrelevant material (such as North African photos, interesting as they are).

Apologies if posted elsewhere, couldn't find anything

I think we did this proposal to death a little while back. If all four routes out of Radstock were available for reopening, this would be third or fourth in the pecking order.

I think that reopening the line would flood the local firewood market for years, there are some pretty hefty trees between the rails in places.

I notice that some lines abroad are now used for 'drive your own' pump trolleys or rail-bikes. In some areas the track isn't as bad so it might be a more realistic possibility

I can't really see why this line needs to be reopened, would there be many who need public transport to travel between these two small towns? There is a bus service doing the journey in 35 minutes that I assume is adequate for the traffic on offer with the advantage of serving the local villages rather than running through open countryside.
