Speaking of the behind the scenes weekend, does this sort of thing happen during Autumn galas as with other railways or is this the only opportunity to have a look round?

The best opportunity to peep behind the scenes (other tan becoming an active SVR volunteer) is July 18th Peep Behind the Scenes event organised by the 4150 Fund:
    http://www.svr.co.uk/SEItem.aspx?a=50

Whilst there is some behind the scenes access on Members weekend & at Galas the July event offers most access.

You can view 82045 anytime you want at Bridgnorth as you have to pass it on your way in up the drive.

Along with members and shareholders, peep behind the scenes is another chance to view other goings on. Usually the september gala, the yard at Bridgnorth is open but not the boilershop.

Thanks very much, how about C+W workshops, as I'm always keen to see what other railways have in that area? Further cheekiness; during a peep behind the scenes day is it a normal timetable so would my GWSR work permit be valid? :D

Have the timetable right by me and it says normal fares and timetable 'C' in operation.

Sounds like there's a lot more than would probably be available during a gala, So I will probably make a visit then, cheers.

Tickets and programmes of the days events for The Eardington Explorer were posted too passengers today (Sunday 15th March).

Information for photographers. This special Branch Line train will arrive on its first trip at Eardington Station at 11.55 on 17th April, with departure after a 'runpast' at 13.10. It will be a unique opportunity to photograph this idyllic country station with its platforms filled with paying passengers, together with a typical GWR branch line train consisting of Auto Tank 1450 and three GWR Churchward 'Toplight' coaches.

Went to SVR gala yesterday. Great to see 82045 in the flesh for the first time in just over a year. The bunker looks superb and i cant wait to see the loco in steam in the not too distant future!

Gav. It could be a good race to the finish with 45551.

I know several people appear to be in a hurry to see a New Build in steam. I don't think the groups or their supporters consider it either a competition or race. 82045 now has a shiny green bunker displaying more positive progress - someone kindly referred to the 'superstructure' as tinwork ! As the year progresses there will certainly be continued major engineering advances on most projects.

Generating sufficient supporters, funds and at the same time ensuring engineering excellence and progress are priorities, and where all the groups major efforts are directed. The only certainty is that there will be several New Builds steaming in the not to distant future.

We should applaud all these efforts, and marvel at the scale of their achievements - they are all winners.

Its quite funny how it always gets turned into a "race". We have exactly the same comments every time when in the shed at Llangollen about who will be finished first, 6880 or 45551.

I will always comment like this, all newbuilds WILL steam as and when the money comes into the bucket/back etc, and the work can be completed. 45551 does however have a date that it NEEDS to steam by for obvious reasons, does this make it better than other new builds? No, just that we have to work even harder than we might have to if the date was 5 years away rather than 3.

BUT at somepoint in the not too distant future there will be a gala where alot of the locos will be "new" to the railway preservation scene and i for one cant wait to see it! (For me it would be a big 5 newbuild with one loco representing each region, G5 for LNER, Atlantic for SR, Pat for LMS, Standard 3 tank for BR and the Saint but in 4-4-2 form from the GWR)

Don't get me wrong. I'm not implying it will be a race to the finish. I see the vast amount of work going on with the 82 every Monday when the gang are there.

I agree with you Gav though. A new build gala is certainly on the cards in at least the next 5 years.

A price such that, as I understand it in a perfect world, paulhitch would buy the first ticket on sale to see it. "Treachery, infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me!" All right, I'm sorry but cut me some slack. It's late, it's my 60th birthday today and I don't have to work anymore OK?!

I dont think theres anything to apologise about KB. I'd like to think those projects all started from someone thinking one little phrase that really winds up Mr H/ Ned Ludd 'Wouldn't it be nice if...' yet look where they are now!

Having been brought into this thread a touch gratuitously I had better defend myself against the starry eyed fraternity. Actually I am fully in favour of the newbuild projects as sensible machinery to meet the needs of tourist railways, for that is what they are, will continue to be needed, increasingly desperately in fact. The operative word is "sensible". Far to many projects are not and, moreover, are only at the early stages before another burst of "wouldn't it be nice" comes along and effort is diluted once more.

On the narrow gauge several newbuild projects have been started, the main difference is that most get completed. I have actually fired and driven a couple of them.

PH quick question, what is your opinion on a group like 45551/82045 etc doing a second loco? Ie the same members paying for another loco? Not that im saying 82045 is but it has always been said they are building one so another one "could" be done easily in the future, weather thats by another group borrowing patterns etc, but i would like to think 45551 has the posibility to build another loco in the future, most people on here know my personal preference!

I'm actually curious to know myself PH, what's your oppion on the new build individually out there? I'm fairly sure your views differ depending on what project. I'm aware you are known for not holding back on Speaking out on such matters.

Pretty sure it's whether the loco in question is ideally suited to pottering backwards and forwards at 25mph, and whether it is economical to run in this fashion.
