82045 The way ahead?

Absolutely so. There would seem to be obvious economies to be made in building more than one although there is an imponderable factor in how much "free" labour would be attracted to second and third builds. However I am not sure what percentage of projects can be ascribed to "free" labour anyway. Gricers are notoriously prone to wishful thinking and false optimism in such matters anyway.

The key question I'm thinking of though, is what of these New Build projects that aren't just limited pottering back and forth on a heritage railway? Forgive me for being presumptuous, but from what you've been saying before, I'm betting I can sum up your opinions roughly as this:

Projects like the G5, F5 and 3MT - all for them.

Patriot, Grange, H2 and George The Fifth - bit of a stretch practicality wise but still ok.

P2 and 47xx, very impractical with way too much dependence on mainline steam being available, but have strong backing so little choice but to accept them.

Claud Hamilton, Streamlined P2, J39 and whatever other Facebook project appears, waste of space deserving no attention.

Would my predictions of your predictions be roughly right, or is it all wrong?

Again, intend no offence, just genuinely curious on your opinion of the varying projects, since you have spoke out about new builds frequently.

Very nearly but not quite right!

Grange would be useful in the heritage railway role on somewhere like Paignton and Dartmouth but the others in the group are too high in the wheel for the purpose and not really big enough to earn[IMG] sufficient to meet the considerable costs of main line running.

Provided mainline steam does not get choked out by technical and operational developments I have no problems with the P2 project. It is being done by people with real business[IMG] ability. Agree with your summation of the 47xx scheme.

On the subject of a possible follow-on loco I suspect those few groups that have had a substantial amount of free labour the first time may get a similar amount again. If the enthusiasm remains; those groups that built a "cheque book" locos might continue with similar fund-raising.

In the context of 82045, the follow-on would perhaps be the tender version 77xxx. Assuming of course the volunteer enthusiasm for a second one, and the finance was forthcoming.

Cost-wise I don't see a second loco being much cheaper than the first. The drawings and patterns are available, but I suppose the metalwork is the biggest cost.

Anyway, no doubt someone will ask the question at the AGM on the 11th. Looking foreward to that, including a quick morning trip up to BH to see the bunker in pride of place.

BR 3MT No 77021 is in the initial stages of construction.
Regarding the production of more than one 82xxx, my opinion remains the same as it was when I started this thread topic in May 2008; the only difference is that 82045 is very much closer to completion and the majority of other new-builds have made significant progress. I'll admit that some have not but more of them than I had dared hope have done extremely well . I do wish I could attend the 82045 AGM next month but will have to make do with images of 82045 for now!

The 77021 project appears to be moving only slowly. At least judging by their website, last updated in March 2014. However "from little acorns", as they say, so good luck to them.
If the 82045 group was to consider another, then no doubt "77022" is available.
However we are getting into the realms of hypothesis, so roll on the 11th April.

Am I right in thinking that "77020" is available? If so, does anybody know why the group building 77021 decided to skip a number?

From the Group's website, I understand that the number 77020 was already "spoken for" when the Group building 77021 first got together in 2013. It may have now transpired that this was not the case but, instead, the Group has used the number "21" as a reference to the 21st Century as part of current and future advertising for this loco. I'm a member of the supporting group for 77021 so I'll try and find out some more.

That makes sense then thanks KB, I did wonder as it seemed a bit odd.

Superb progress and also some more excellent support from benefactors to this most worthy of projects (well, not so much a project now, more akin to "just" a previously extinct locomotive being put together!).

Indeed, wheels next hopefully, and perhaps it is safe to assume that this will be the last winter in the open, even if covered.

All will no doubt be discussed at the AGM on the 11th, --looking foreward to that.

( I wonder if the "77xxx question" will be asked....?)

Well, we were promised some major visual developments in 2015, and the Trust are again living up to both their promises and supporters expectations, and it is still only April. I am sure there will be further major developments and additions as the year progresses.

I wouldn't be over optimistic about indoor cover. 82045 is the only major New Build, as far as I am aware, which is being worked on, assembled and stored in the open. In my personal view a rather unfortunate state of affairs. Fortunate however for those interested in her progress !

Not so sure about the 77xxx question. My understanding is that although advice and assistance would be freely available for another group, the present 'working gang' and the 'office staff' will not be in the market for another challenge. At the very least they will have 82045 to maintain when she is in service.

Excellent progress and showing clearly that "it can be done" again. I reckon this is one specific locomotive that is going to bring in the tourists - the Tornado factor is a strong one.

Im with you on this Simon. With my newbuild gala suggestion hows about this for the SVR? A red Patriot on the LMS set, a Grange on one of the GW sets, 2999 on the other, 60163 on the teaks, 82045 on the one local and the railmoter on the other, hows that sound for a gala?
