When are you creating a Facebook page for this project? I will give it my total support by "liking" the page. I'm assuming that the tunnels will tilt when you go round the corners.

Fen Bog's going to be nice and shallow once all those 140mph Pendolinos have gone flying into it.

I for one can't see it, I've been banned by the Group Admin for daring to point out economic reality to them! They don't see it as relevant, the mythical Chinese investors apparently do not conform to such conventions, but for me the problem is very simple - Whitby is a small town, it already has a rail link that could be upgraded to improve journey times both south and north, but no-one's interested because there isn't the demand there. Unless a research centre adds many thousands of jobs that isn't going to change. Add if you did want to improve rail access, would you choose to upgrade a railway that was original built for horse drawn carriages and runs through 18 miles of virtually nil population to an even smaller town than Whitby, which is only seven miles or so from a station on the main line that you would be joining anyway!

the first question is is there any market for a York to Whitby service using excising routes , and if there is is it a workable timetable, for instance if by train it takes 3 hours, yet the bus can do it in 1 ,then you have your answer, its not going to be worth doing, re opening disused routes is a non starter unless its an area where another route is needed, such as Lewes to Uckfield, or Oakhampton to Plymouth, re opening a route just because you want to put a preserved line out of business isnt that good a reason either

But that's the thing: they do want to put the NYMR out of business. Scratch the surface of these people and you'll find that they have no motive beyond envy and vindictiveness.

The Admins of the Facebook Group that is defending and putting across constructive critism and alternatives have all received threats, had letters sent to Employer, Police visits, also direct letter to the NYMR naming and asking for us to be dealt with.

Of course most of us are blocked by all the main people pushing this non proven scheme to the public A Deb***, N Kip**** # and D Rea** as well as other names used.
The scheme being suggested has been costed they say at £3 million a mile. They have the financial backers to fund this what we reckon will cost more than £100 million and who is going to pay that for no financial return?

The FB group supporting the NYMR and suggesting how the the Esk Valley line can be used and improved (instead of destroying the NYMR by double tracking, modern Units running at much faster speeds) is " Improving Whitby Rail Services and Links"
You are welcome to look in or join.

It should be noted that we are all happy for having Rilling Junction to somewhere in Pickering relaid, without the need to damage or destroy the NYMR.

There are well documented issues with Lewes-Uckfield, one being Brighton-London would be slower than the direct route, another being that existing bottlenecks e.g. Clapham Jct-E. Croydon which would need (very expensive) work for the additional capacity required. There are some serious problems with rail capacity in this country. Rural branchlines projects need to compete with all other projects for funding.

Previous to what I said about Railfuture, even they seem to be more in favour of glamorous reopening projects more than Network Rail. Reading the RUSes NR's focus is on doing clever things within the confines of the existing system like increasing trian frequencies, resignalling, remodelling junctions, reducing pathing conflicts, platform and train extensions, which aren't as glamarous but are apparently more cost effective.

Modern network and preserved lines don't mix well not only because of the speed issue. Heritage lines are using life-expired equipment. If it fails, the consequences are manageable within the heritage framework. Network rail are moving on from "legacy" equipment, and if it fails it has consequences.

I am having a chuckle at the suggestion to (1) use legacy rolling stock (presumably, pacers) and (2) having tilting trains. A "Pacerlino" anyone?

Then it's high time restraining orders were taken out against these people.

Yet there is not such sentiment directed at the likes of Castle Howard, Eden [POW] Camp Museum or Flamigoland. There again there isn't likely to be any against Flamigoland as they are at least on paper in favour of the Pickering-Rillington re-instatement as they'd also have a station built for them! As a member like many others here of the Moors I'm not really loosing much sleep over the plan. Though I do have a "vision" of this now "secret society" as their Farsebook page is a closed page, turning up one day in the field beside where Rillington junction used to be, tearing down the boundary fence and starting track alterations. All without prior warning or consent and telling Network Rail/Trian Operators they have no option but to accept it!

Mind you I most admit to taking the view of not saying NO! out of hand per sa to any such ideas, with taking a good sound look at it first. Just look at the Moors "extension" from Grosmont to Whitby. Though in all seriousness in the circumstances due to the various blockages and other problems this idea is a none starter.

If what they are reported to have done is true and there is any possibility of more of the same, then restraining orders would seem a wise move.

As regards their project, however, given the huge discrepancy between what it would cost and what revenues it might bring in, is it not possible just to say "Give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves"?

That's the idea; the problem is that their nonsense can bring other, more potentially viable schemes elsewhere, into disrepute.

I understand that the initial 'stirrer' has again been posting spurious information on a FB group - one that he controls and doesn't allow any discussion or debate on. In it he claims to have had 'agreement' from the NYMR about increasing their line speeds and that no demolition of anything in Pickering would be necessary to reestablish a through connection... Sadly I'm one of many who has been 'blocked' by this individual, but hopefully someone will put up a link or screenshots of the 'wibble and froth...'
