    Does anyone know why these first 10 peaks were hardly ever seen at the southern end of the Midland main line? D11 upwards were seen frequently.

    They were in the early 1960s !

    When operated on the WCML they replaced 46106 / 115 on the Manchester - Euston services that were diverted to St Pancras and which crossed around Kettering about 15:30 each day. IIRC in 1963 (a) the diverted services became subsumed into the MML services and were hauled by production Class 45 / 46 traction (b) the Class 44s were re-allocated to Toton for working freight duties. At Toton the 44s were slightly different from the production series thus were used by Toton on out-and-home workings to such locations as Corby (steelworks), Wellingborough, Whitemoor (March) and Washwood Heath sidings.

    That was one reason why in October 1977 I was one of the D&EPG members that arranged for the remaining 6 locomotives to work a St Pancras - Manchester railtour as a "Farewell to Class 44" operations that paved the way for future diesel-hauled railtours with freight locomotives.

    Neil - a quick point re D164 getting a helping hand; there were some workings from Plymouth that saw a pair of locomotives working to Bristol in order to cover duties heading west as Bristol was THE change-over point for many NE-SW workings. In 1970 I was hauled by a Class 45 (D25) and 42 (D813) combination and later on in the 1970s a number of Penzance - Plymouth workings were booked for a pair of locomotives chosen from Classes 47; 50 and 52 on a regular basis.
