Well quite, but on this issue, the Mods, (rightly in my opinion), have appealed for restraint, and by and large, members do appear to have complied. We do live in a fast moving media driven world however, and one where opinions are often formed / changed at a similar rate.

But there are LEGAL and COSTLY consequences to the wrong facts, misleading facts or - even worse - pure trolling; how deep are YOUR pockets ?
Especially in the present situation when the words "possible criminal prosecution" have entered the arena.
This is a serious subject and there's no room - repeat NO ROOM - for anything but serious discussion which I presume the Moderators are monitoring very closely.

In all of this, I'm left wondering what the unions take on all of this is, as there hasn't been a single word from either of them, that I know of, on the matter.

Have they been politely asked by NR not to comment?

Wouldn't that be like a red rag to a bull? Also, who's to say that those involved are in a union?

I just find it strange that the unions haven't commented - just wondering, nowt else!

Yes, you would have thought being asked not to comment would be a red rag....... also you would have thought a fair few of those employed would be union men..........

BUT as all this revolves around safety issues, which unions tend to be quite vocal about, maybe they've decided it would be wise to say nothing and stay out of it until the facts (that will be made public) are published........

As an aside and to lighten up the proceedures on here.Supposed to be going to Carlisle. on the 16th May.This has already been cancelled twice and now all this.
Not a main line steam traveller at all, Had 2 trips behind King Edwarrd--- Broke down twice..1 trip behind Taw Valley run out of steam, a really nice trip behind Edgecombe till a points failure near Hatton sat me looking at a tree for one and a half hours.Am I just unlucky or should I just stay indoors.
Promise I'll keep away from Scotsman when its running.:)

You know I have been thinking about loco owners and societies that are not based in Carnforth except 45690. 60009, 61306, 61994, 60007, 4965, 5043, 6201, 6233, 4079, 6023, 35028, Jeremy Hosking locos and NRM locos(61603, 70013). Many of these are privately owned or are operated by non profit organizations. For example, when was the last time that Roody had a failure on the mainline? I feel really bad for these people.

Ha Ha Ha. On such a serious matter there is some genuine humour around. That is great therapy and your GP would no doubt condone having an injection of humour on what is such a serious subject.

As an aside, on a different forum with contributions from mostly professional railwaymen, drivers, guards, railway managers etc, I picked up one particularly poignant posting from a driver who clearly condemned what seemed to have happened on the footplate but said that the driver and fireman were probably going through the worst days of their lives, professionally anyway and that we should have some thought and sympathy for their plight. It was a brilliant and moving post. One cannot begin to imagine what the crew are going through with this growing crisis for mainline steam.

As I said earlier in the thread people now need to be very careful what they wish for

Over the last few years we have enjoyed a main line steam programme like no other , with loco's ranging the length and breadth of the country , regular summer steam on multiple routes and almost all of this down to WCRC. All of a sudden it is gone (currently temporarily ). WC continued to run with Vacuum braked stock , they've passed out a whole generation of new fireman whose exploits and prowess with the shovel has been thrilling enthusiasts and in the main all operated safely and successfully

No one can step into the breach and fill the gap . So what next ? There are a lot of questions which right now I wouldn't want in the public domain . I suspect most are believing that come the 16th May main line steam recommences as if nothing has happened

    Humdy...........................

    So business 1 folds
business 2 & 3 basically live off servicing business 1
Given what has happened with business 1, even if business 4 is squeaky clean it is going to suffer more than a bit of a reputation damage.

Looking at what happened, and some of the history and comments, it reminded me rather of an incident involving a friend of my older brother, a farmer and a shotgun that rather fell into the category of 'how could you be so stupid' especially as it could have resulted in Mr Farmer going to prison

Now rather than referring directly to what happened on the day, it seems that the major issue is the culture at WCRC.

My younger brothers comment on the farmer incident was that a lot of self employed and small business's tend to take a view that H&S - and often the law in general doesnt apply to them. Which rather seems to tie up with what is being reported about the culture in WCRC

Publicly criticising NR last year in a way which accused them of being vindictive, harsh and unreasonable may not have been the wisest response.
Such a bullish response from the MD will surely not have gone unnoticed at NR HQ so when further matters arose demanding scrutiny its unsurprising the full ton of bricks has descended.
Ref post 493 didn't the MD of WCRC start business life as a farmer? Apologies in advance for any crossed wires.

How can we be told charters will run when many or all in the near future may be or are cancellled due to operational issues?

In a word no not if the move were operated by WCRC. DBS could move them (assuming they were air braked and they were able to) but the point of the suspension is to prevent WCRC from operating trains under their own safety case.

Perhaps not, but this is not a vindictive response from NR.

Worth pointing out, of course, that the press, hardly friends of the unions, have been running this as "Hogwarts Express banned". I can't imagine they'd take too kindly to the unions coming out and condemning something which in the eyes of many is little more than that.
