Generally 6/7 coaches on Battersby runs at Galas.
Diesel doesn't assist except when leading at front of course.

Caught out today by Birch Hall Inn at Beck Hole still on winter opening, so in evening not until 19:30. See website for hours if you were thinking of beer here.

Getting off 60007 to find a closed pub is almost like finding D7628 on your train! The 31 is still here by the way, it didn't go back a.m.

Could do with the 31 staying, I know we were meant to be getting a main line registered diesel on hire.......who knows?

Here are some shots from Saturday. A great day was had, and had some great conversation with fellow photographers, although timetable slippage was evident from the first train!

Enjoyable gala ! Homefleet, putting in their usual solid performances ! Little to be said on the run to Battersby, with the overpowering rear gunner !

An excellent three days. There were a couple of hiccups, but timekeeping was, for NYMR, remarkable. The slightly bloated timetable with recovery built in certainly works.

62005 did come out today, replacing 75029. It was turned at Pickering (so ran both ways tender first) so all locos now face south.

Highlights? Too many to list I think, but the staggering volume of steam action remains almost unique. Close of play this evening over an hour in Grosmont saw 61994, 76079, 44871, 45407, 60007 on trains and shunting to/from shed. The lineside shots published are excellent, but this intensity of steam activity at a country junction is hard to capture in digital format - you have to sit and enjoy!

Unless it is hiding at Whitby end of Grosmont. It came of shed and chugged thru Grosmont stn an hour ago. It might be in pole position for prompt handover to NR on Monday. Cannot be arsed to leave my beer to look!

Adding the après-gala. 62005 is on the short Whitby duty today - 1040 Grosmont etc.

76079 was on long Whitby but is poorly and was taken off at Grosmont on 1000 Whitby. Not sure what went fwd as I went straight back to Whitby with the K1.

60007 on 0925 Pickering etc, Daisy on 1100/1500 Pickering and supposedly 1330/1715 Grosmont (1245/1715 Whitby). Not sure how they balance the Whitby sets with Daisy wkg.

I half wish I hadn't started this, but thought recording what the gala visitors are doing beyond the w/e would be of interest, even though 'visiting' could be longer if WCRC problems drag on.

After an excellent gala and I had a run behind 62005 today, all was well with the world. Then NYMR reverted to form today. I mention 76079 above, well 1030 Grosmont - Pickering and 1200 return was cancelled. I got back to Grosmont from Whitby on 62005 around 1320 with a choice of DMU Daisy forward to Pickering or 1315 to Whitby for which there was no loco, but D7628 which is also poorly was coaxed to life and eventually took the train. I hopped on 1337 bus to Whitby and got the hell out of it. Alas the NYMR management of this so far as the punters who have paid lots is concerned remains dire. This isn't unusual alas.

Famous last words, but Gala could repeat last week and be a success as they provide the necessary resources, or there are sufficient locos in steam to step up a duty if needed. Even last Sunday, few trains turned up with the advertised power but the show went on.

Outside of the Gala the NYMR is the perfect example of '**** happens'; why it happens with such regularity in Grosmont I know not, but there never seems to be a plan B. Each department is furiously digging itself out of the ****, but speaks not to the other departments. The end result is large numbers of passengers who need to be kept happy up to their necks in **** and without a shovel.
