Was at the NYMR Gala on Saturday with the 3 Black 5's, 45407, 44871 and 45428. Started thinking to myself which railway has had the most number of Black 5's run along its lines (during preservation).

    I'd go with KWVR.

    44422
    44767 KWVR NYMR ELR?
    44806 NYMR
    44871 KWVR NYMR ELR
    44901
    44932
    45000
    45025 KWVR
    45110
    45163
    45212 KWVR NYMR ELR
    45231
    45293
    45305 KWVR
    45337 KWVR ELR
    45379
    45407 KWVR NYMR ELR
    45428 NYMR
    45491

    KWVR - 7
    NYMR - 6
    ELR - 5

These are the ones I'm pretty sure of - anyone else beat 7 or correct any?

I am guessing you have missed off the lines other than "top 3"

45231 and 45337 have both visited the NYMR for longer than a single weekend - I have a vague feeling that 45110 visited for a Gala a good few years back but could be wrong.

Severn Valley has had both 45110 (home loco) and (4)5000 run there, plus at least 44871 and 45407 as guests (and I am sure others)

North Norfolk has done pretty well.

Biggin Hill did indeed visit the Moors, IIRC in 2006.

Not a contender for the record, but we've had 3 different ones run at Llangollen.

    44806, 45337 and 45231 (briefly).

We had a Black 5 boiler in our yard once. Does that count?

I stand to be corrected, but I'm pretty sure 45110 has also run on the KWVR as a visitor, sometime during the early 1990s .

I think that Swanage may be able to match that - 44871, 44932 and 45305. Severn Valley too - 5000, 45110 and 44871. Off the top of my head I think that the Mid Hants has hosted 44767 and 45231 as well as 45379 - the former in connection with a main line trip.

You may be thinking of 48773 in about 1992 it layed over there between railtours I believe. 45110 didnt return to traffic until summer '98. Easy to get mixed up though.

We had 45337 (or should I say M5337) there back in the late 90's. Can't actually remember the dates exactly will have to double check

The NYMR had 45231 for a gala so that's 9.

I read that in service the Black 5s could be seen "from Wick to Wessex and from Goole to the Gower".
Has a Black 5 worked on any preserved line that never had a 5 on it before preservation? Off the top of my head; the Colne Valley Railway?

I'm pretty certain that one never got to the Bluebell pre-preservation, though photo evidence shows they were moderately common visitors to Brighton in the early 1960s, via other routes. In preservation the Bluebell has hosted 45231 on loan and 44932 on a railtour.

Would a Black 5 have made it to Kingswear in BR days? Or Ashburton? I think 45407 & 44871 (suprise suprise) have 45407 to Kingswear and 44871 to Buckfastleigh.

Certainly not Ashburton due to the axle loading. The section to Buckfastleigh was only upgraded in the preservation era. The Kingswear branch was a red route so Black 5's would, in theory, be allowed....... but whether any actually went down there is debatable.
    Cheers,
    Ray.
