Have to say I'm tempted to come back this weekend and get some snaps (and a few more cups of tea)

This will be my first time visiting the NYMR during a Gala, where is the best place to park? I've parked previously in Goathland, but that was on a standard running day and it was fairly quiet.

Any tips, suggestions will be most welcome.

Pickering will probably be OK as the Trout Fishing lake is likely to be open to provide extra parking, or if you don't mind a bit more of a walk there is the overspill carpark at the Trout Farm, further along towards New Bridge. Otherwise, Levisham is probably your next best bet.

Goathland should be OK as per usual.
Nat parks car park and the local farmer with his field opposite the Aidensfield shops.

Has some sort of modification been made to 3442's tender?

The water space has been raised at the rear to square off the end of the tender. Not quite sure how much extra water it accomadates but it sure doesnt look right. The standard LNER tender is a handsome bit of kit but that square section doesnt do it any favours.

Understood. It doesn't look very nice, does it? But then, enlarged tenders seldom do.

500 gallons extra was quoted on the NYMR Unofficial Forum, which is quite a significant increase for an LNER tender I believe.

Grosmont is a good and easy place to park if you use the National Park Car park area near the station. Its realtively cheap for all day and if you buy a ticket I think it would be transferable to move to the car park in Goathland village etc. Can certainly reccomend that, and if in doubt, I would think a volunteer is at the one at Grosmont to help people go and suggest they get tickets. Its a worthwhile cause that does give funds to the national park, and when you consider all those paths we use to go to areas around the railway are maintained by them, its a worthwhile cause for your money. Everyone wins!

As far as I'm aware the tickets are not transferable between Grosmont and Goathland NP carpark. It's worth looking at the National Park website for check in case things have changed since I looked into this last year.
You can buy an annual pass which lets you park in all the long stay carparks throughout the National Park (on sale at Danby and Sutton Bank for about 40 quid last year). There is an annual pass for some of the individual carparks, but again it only covers that one place. On gala days I tend to park in the NYMR carpark at Pickering and ride along the line to Grosmont, spending several hours there before taking the train back again.
    Kind regards
    Anne

Seems they are not transferable. Must have changed since a warden told me that a year or so ago. Still the cost of tickets at sites is still cheaper than day tickets at some places.

62005 (D7628 at back) to Battersby Friday and 75029 Saturday - both not exactly common on this run (75029 did a couple last year, but tender first, and 62005 did 2 days in March).

NYMR should offer annual parking permits, tempted with the National Parks one, especially when I visit 15-20 times per year.

    Thanks for the info.

Cost me £85 in parking last year

What I presume are updated rosters now on the website show 75029 on the Battersby runs on both days.

Why do you want to transfer from one car park to another when there are plenty of trains between the two! Or does that involve buying a train ticket!?

NYMR loco rosters are always a moveable feast. Although the original guests are no more, it will still be an 8 steam loco gala, which can't be bad, can it? 44871, 45407, 45428, 60007, 61994, 62005, 75029 & 76079 (+ D7628). 60007 was priming badly yesterday and is having a water change tomorrow but should be out on Sat/Sun.

Tempting fate, wasn't I - I wouldn't care - I actually went to check despite having noted that 62005 was on the 09:48 from Pickering when discussing what one of our professional advisors could do in terms of train riding ahead of a 1pm meeting - and he said "I can't do a Battersby unfortunately and get back in time!

Probably due to the fact that some days involve both. Certainly the NYMR gets more than enough cash from me riding. If not on a gala day I tend to deliberately go through and ride on a quieter day's mid season and christmas. Often I will be there several days during a gala and riding at some point. Will be after the K1 of a Riley Black 5 after work at the weekend.
