I know he was working on a NG railway in North Wales, possibly Welshpool, but he would no doubt be interested in The Mid-Hants Memories thread.

The Clifford we are looking for is about 55-60 years old, and spoke with a funny accent.

If you know him, please point him to our thread here:

Clifford Jones from Coventry (funny accent) used to volunteer on the Talyllyn - he was introduced to the |TR by John and Janet Cox. I think he was a pupil at the school where Janet was the Cook. The lower end of the age range you quote is about right.

Coventry? He hails from Aldershot! but he always spoke like a Wodean girl. :D Always had twouble with his R's" :D

Tin Tram you say? He was chasing after a women who moved up that way, but I think she lived in Carnforth, called Jane.

He was a Financial Consultant, but that's what he called himself. ;)

Well, like I said, we lost track of him when he went North, chasing fluff, then we heard he was on a NG line in Wales, but that would have been in the mid 80's. After that, nothing,

According to my friend Martin he's taken up where Time Team left off, and is happily working on a dig on Hadrian's Wall. Makes my arthritis hurt, just thinking of digging up there.

Still, if he's up there, there is a chance he's at the Alston - Haltwhistle line. I did it when it was still open, as standard gauge, and then I've been there a few times since closure, and NG relaying, but not for the past 20 years.

I wonder how many times that New All Weather Road has been closed since the service was withdrawn? I remember the hype about the new road, and how it would replace the reliable train.

There aren't many people like Clifford, and in the early days of the MHR, there was a group of special people, who drove the railway forward, with a devil may care attitude. He was one of them.

I expect there were people like us on most railways, in the beginning of most lines, but we all went our own ways, but I think after 40 years, it's time for a meeting of the old hands, to just share the funny, and very not PC things we got up too.

So, who is responsible for him becoming an archeologist? Or did some people arrive one day, wearing suits, and carrying violin cases? :D
