I suspect that for the operators they have to made a decision - are there are 'low bookings' - which can be rectified possibly by getting a few more bums of seats with advertising against 'next to no bookings' when with the experience these operators have they know that the cost of advertising will not achieve the required and makes sense before any more capital is expended.

you have to give notice to contractually cancel everything - loco hire and the TOC crew hire, the track access, the caterers, the carriage stock et al.

even with TE offering 5% discount on all bookings made upto last night they still had to decide to can the 24th May almost a month before...

    BTW

The TE may 24th cancellation has a separate thread.....

I know it's got it's own thread, but as discussion of cancellation of the 24th May TE has developed here, I would just point out that I had a Twitter exchange with Pathfinder / TBEL on the matter. I asked them if the other dates were booking ok, and they said they were so there could well be something in the theory that 24th May is just too early for some. It is a bank holiday weekend, and perhaps people are doing family stuff at home. All that said however, I wouldn't be surprised if some had been put off booking due to the issues of which we're only too well aware. I'm also not entirely convinced the via Bath itinerary pick ups contain as many people with an interest in doing this trip than those in Weston. Many join at Weston, and that itinerary also has the benefit of a later start from Bristol. Anyway, let's see what happens with the next date, which is the traditional route via Weston.
