Like the shots posted already - the one in the woods on the SVR reminds me of some Welsh narrow gauge locations :)

Couldn't make the outbound run, but caught the return at Sapperton

The Deltic design is indeed a 2 stroke engine but has normal pressurized oil system with dry sumps and collects the return oil from the three crankshafts at the bottom of the lower crankshaft where it is pumped around again unlike the total loss Scooter engines I suspect you are thinking of ( and old Villers/Jap motor mower engines before 4 stroke Briggs and Stratton became common)

Being an opposed piston design with three sets of liners it has a lot of pistons and thus even more piston rings which when worn or the liner is glazed let by oil which is then burnt and appears as a blue haze. You can see from the various pictures that one engine on the loco is burning more oil than the other. The design never got really on top of its piston problems. Another source could be the blower bearing seals.

White smoke can indeed indicate water vapour but can also be unburnt fuel vapour from poor injection or low compression. This is especially common when first starting in cold weather as the many youtube videos of English Electric class 37, 40 and 50 starting in winter show.

I have been told there are two ways of dealing with this:-

1 Call the fire brigade , block the line and risk water damage from the hozes

2 Put the controls in engine only and rev the nuts off it. The exhaust blast puts the fire out - allegedly
